The Statement of Purpose
"A man sooner or later discovers that he is the master-gardener of his soul, the director of his life." I discovered this a little late in mine. As a kid, books had always fascinated me. From fairy tales to Enid Blyton, I had never missed an opportunity to read and imagine a world beyond my dreams. I had always been an avid reader and would read all that was available to me in the school library and what my pocket money allowed me to purchase.
Soon I started reading classics like Jane Austen, Louisa Alcott, Charles Dickens, William Shakespeare among others. Fantasy and fiction became my favourite genres. Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings and The Wheel of Time took a special place in my heart. J. R. R. Tolkien became my favourite author. I also went on to read the works of Ayn Rand, Dan Brown, Jeffery Archer, Joseph Heller, R K Narayan, Paulo Coelho and Robin Sharma. English had always been my beloved subject and nothing would give me more joy than to write pages after pages of essays. Then I entered college.
As I said earlier, I discovered a little late that I am the director of my life. My father is a Chartered Accountant and has been my idol since I was a kid. Everything he did was the right thing for me. Having his own firm, he wanted me to join C.A. and I did, not realising I was taking one of the most important decisions of my life. I just wanted to be the perfect daughter.
I let my life and decisions be ruled by my parent's dreams and not mine. I took up Commerce and graduated in it. I started working with my dad and studying for C.A. But I never felt a sense of fulfillment. This is when I decided to attend a writing workshop so I could try something new. After the workshop I started doing a little bit of writing and editing work for the journalist and publisher who had conducted it. I began to rediscover myself. I finally started doing something I was good at and which truly made me happy.
So then, I decided to join the Part time Journalism and Mass Communication course which opened up new arenas of knowledge and understanding for me. Due to the guidance and motivation of my professors I began writing poems again and continued to search the 'ME' in myself. I then convinced my parents of my career choice.
I have also done writing and editing work for my college magazine and have had an article published in a newspaper.
I have always loved the English language and literature but simply never got an opportunity to study it. I want to learn and understand the mysteries of this beautiful language. I want to explore all the wonderful works that all the great writers have entrusted us with. I want to be a part of the magic of a book's coming to life. I want to become a successful Editor in a publishing house. I just need one opportunity to be 'ME' and to do what I feel I was born to do.
I believe that I will be able to truly accomplish my goal armed with a Masters Degree and knowledge from a prestigious university such as yours. I realise that dreams can be achieved only through sincere and dedicated efforts and I won't leave any stone unturned in achieving mine. I sincerely hope that you will consider me a worthy candidate for your programme and thus give me a chance to follow my heart as I believe that, "Those who dare to dream and have the courage to follow them, create history".
