Scholarship / My Goal is to become an International Development specialist. KGSP Statement of Purpose [6]

Hello everyone,
I am applying for a KGSP to study Masters Degree in 2017/2018. I kindly request your assistance to review my essay. Thanks

Goal of study & Study Plan

- Goal of study, title or subject of research, and detailed study plan

My goal in studying a Masters course in International Development and Cooperation is to be a professional international development specialist by expanding my knowledge and acquiring essential skills that will build up to my academic background in Political Science degree and Economic Diplomacy diploma. I also target on mastering the Korean language to equip myself with one more communication tool, which will be an added advantage in my career in international affairs.

A subject of research that I would love to work on is "How developing countries can make use of International Development Cooperation to achieve sustainable development." I chose this subject because; despite numerous interactions and cooperation with developed countries, or the Official Development Assistance many developing countries including my country Tanzania, demonstrate slow development steps. This makes one wonder, What really is the role of International Development Cooperation in pursuit of sustainable development? What should develop countries do, what policy should be put in place or how available policies can facilitate the gain from these interactions?

Taking an example of Asian Superpowers, South Korea and China, among other factor for their economic success stories is the role of International Cooperation. Tracing back in history, during the 1960s these countries had almost the same development level with Tanzania, which had recently gained her political independence. Today South Korea and China have left Tanzania far behind and are now among the great donners to Tanzania development projects. The economic history of these countries shows that these countries used their international cooperation and foreign development aid to their advantage. South Korea particularly, has used foreign aid and its cooperation with USA and Japan to facilitate trade (imports and exports), technological and innovations transfer as well as institutional knowledge. On the other hand, since her independence from British colonial domination in 1961 to date Tanzania has been in a number of international cooperation and has been a recipient of International Development Assistance from various countries including South Korea under KOICA, but despite all these the country is still characterized with poor health services, poor education system, poor infrastructure etc.

This research subject is relevant as it address the current state of international affairs, that is, economic cooperation. Previously countries interactions mainly focused on political and security issues, different from today where these interactions have given great emphasis to economic cooperation which is characterized with increase in foreign government aids (ODA), international investments, the rise of MNCs, NGOs and individuals as actors in shaping local and foreign policies .etc. The outcome of this research will provide a model which can be put into place to assist developing countries achieve the intended outcome of International Cooperation.

I plan to use the international relations theories and development models learned during the first year of my master's course to conduct my research. The universities I have selected have well-structured courses that correspond to my research subject. Courses such as Research Design and methodology, International Cooperation and Sustainable development as well as Contemporary Issues in Development will be useful tools in conducting my research. As means to collect relevant data l plan to use literature review, questionnaires as well as interviewing professionals in the international development field.

I plan to finish my studies within the proposed three years. In the first year I will be committed to studying Korean language. After a year of language studies, I will start masters courses while at the same time building up on my research project.

My academic background is a good foundation that will help me manage taking this program and do well in this field of studies. I have taken part in various seminars on topics such as Political Theories, Human Rights, Humanitarian Actions, etc. I was also able to do a research paper for my Diploma, on the Effects of FDI to host countries and the government role to manage the effects.

The extensive seminar presentation and group work I have participated in during my undergraduate studies has shaped me into a confident and flexible person with ability to work well as an individual and in a team. Apart from that, being a leader in school, church and family settings has given me the opportunity to work with people from diverse background and the experience has helped me sharpen my interpersonal skills. The leadership experience has also taught me patience, tolerance, confidence and commitment. These values as well as my personal experience will help me cope with challenges of studying in new environment to reach my goals and I will also use these values in relating with my fellow students.

Scholarship / My love for motion pictures started from a tender age. SOP FOR THE KGSP [9]

@debby89
Hi Debby

My observation is that your second paragraph is too big and have multiple ideas. Try to represent one idea per paragraph this will help you in developing a good essay on Statement of Purpose, like the example of the two sentences below, you can treat them as the basis for your research problem/ the motivation for wanting to do a major in Film. The paragraph in Bold can be a starting point of your future plan essay

1. During the time of my final year [...] (Hons) in Digital Film and Television.

2. Upon graduating I realised that [...] a blow to the country's economy.

Having studied Masters in Arts, [...] to do really well in my studies.

Scholarship / International Development and Cooperation KGSP Letter of Self Introduction [10]

Hello everyone,
Kindly assist in reviewing my Letter of introduction for the KGSP
Thanks.

great opportunity for my career development

My interest in International Cooperation and Development career started years back when I lived near a refugee camp and witnessed their sufferings, and it evolved with time and experience as I grew up living in a third world country. My hope and wish is to become a global development specialist and contribute to sustainable development in developing countries

I graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor Degree in Political Science and language, and later on took a Post Graduate Diploma course in Economic Diplomacy from the Centre for Foreign Relations (CFR), to build up on my career in International relations and go with the current shift of emphasis in International affairs, from political relations to Economic Relations. To add value to my International Relations career, I also took optional courses in French and Chinese languages. With French which I frequently use at work am an intermediate speaker and Chinese I am a basic user (HSK1) but enrolled for HSK2.

This whole academic experience has equipped me with essential skills that have shaped me into a good leader, team player and optimistic and confident person who can cope with challenging situations.

After my undergraduate graduation, I had an opportunity to volunteer at a local organization, African Women in Mining Network. (AFWIMNTZ), a group of women making and selling coal briquettes. The volunteer experience built me professionally and personally as I expanded my knowledge and understating on gender and energy issues, environment conservation and the battle against poverty. With AFWINTZ, apart from writing a number of project proposals on environmental projects in an effort to minimize the use of firewood and charcoal in the community, I also got opportunities to attend meetings with entrepreneurs and big investors, on influencing investment policies, under the Tanzania Private Sector Foundation (TPSF). I also got an opportunity to represent the group in Post 2015 Development Agenda Consultative Workshop, "The Future We Want" prepared by the UN to assess the implementation of the Millennium Development Goal.

I discovered my potential in leadership when I was awarded twice for outstanding leadership in High School. In 2014 while working with REPOA, I was entrusted with a team of four research assistants to collect data for the World Bank Project titled Service Delivery Indicators Education and Health Survey in Mbeya region sampled schools, and we successful completed the task.

I have put into practice my leadership skills in a youth group in my church, first as a treasurer and recently as a chairperson. When I started as a treasurer the group of youth had no project at hand and it had no fund most of the activities were funded by parents and the Church elders. As a treasurer I initiated a business project, selling fliers with bible verses for the day and it has expanded from selling fliers to books, candles, rosaries etc. which has made the group self-reliant. As a chair person I coordinate the main youth activities. Our group does charity activities by providing clothing, food and moral support to the needy and sick. So far in one year we have been able to visit and give supplies to one orphanage, visited the sick in the local area, clean the beach area and organize two football matches with other parishes. Currently, my team and I are organizing a visit to the community of senior people with leprosy in Kigamboni Nunge area, Dar es Salaam.

Currently I am working with the IOM as a Client Service Assistant in the Canadian Visa Section. Here I have experienced firsthand how my colleagues works closely with migrants and refugees helping them with resettlement making it possible for the migrants to live a better life. The experience has awakened in me the desire to work as closely for the international community and my country. The experience has made me question my role in the community development and the potential I am holding back by working as a visa clerk. The experience has made me realize that I am underutilizing my skills. I believe that I should be out there involved directly or in direct with community development whether in policy making or implementation or designing development projects and programs.

The KGSP is a great opportunity for my career development and it is also the reason to why I chose Korea for my Master's degree. Acquiring a master's degree under the KGSP will build up on my academic background and sharpen my skills and knowledge. The program also will give me a chance to meet people of diverse experiences and culture which will be an essential asset for my career goal. The Korean language program under KGSP, will add up to my list of languages, it is useful in my career, as I could be the bridge between Korea and my country especially at this time where the economic relation between my country and South Korea is significantly growing, and considering the fact that Tanzania is one of the Targeted beneficiary of the Korean Government Official Development Assistance. And through this program I will get high quality and competitive education offered by the Korean universities. The KGSP will also give me an opportunity to get a firsthand experience of the rich and deep history and culture of Korea and learn of its success story to later apply it for the development of my country

So the intention of the questions was to build up on the Research Title.

Should I remove them or should I present them in onother way?

Thank you once again.

Undergraduate / It started with an asthma attack. Personal statement for medicine course. [5]

Hello Jasmin I think the two starting paragraphs are confusing it is unclear as to which between the two events gave you the inspiration to pursue a career in Medicen/human health.

I think you should rewrite and clarify which motivated you, is it your medical emergencey 13 years ago or is it your experience with Kidney patients?

Undergraduate / It started with an asthma attack. Personal statement for medicine course. [5]

@Jasmine855

If you want to include both ideas, I think you could start with the first one as an experience that triggered the inspiration to pursue a medical career and that the second experience reaffirmed your interest in the field. try putting it in one paragraph.

to gain experience and then apply my knowledge

After my studies and acquirering a masters degree in International Development, I plan to work in Korea for a year with any organization that will be willing to recruit me. This will help me get practical experience from a country that has successful risen up from the low economic level into being one of the global donnor of Official Development Assistance (ODA) to poor countries.

After a year of practical experience in Korea, I will return to my country and apply my knowledge in my country by working with NGOs or public institutions. I will be happy to work in the projects between the Government of Korea and the Government of Tanzania. As I believe that when I return in Tanzania, I will be equipped with relevant theoretical and practical skills which combined with Korean, French and Chinese language skills I will make a significant contribution to the development of my country and the international community at large.
