Writing Feedback / Rate and comment on my argumentative essay for GRE - super screen movies [4]

Please comment on the following argumentative GRE essay. This is my first attempt at it. Please provide feedback specially in relation to whether I have answered the essay task or whether I have gone tangentially.

Essay task-

The following is taken from a memo from the advertising director of the Super Screen Movie Production Company.

According to a recent report from our marketing department, during the past year, fewer people attended Super Screen-produced movies than in any other year. And yet the percentage of positive reviews by movie reviewers about specific Super Screen movies actually increased during the past year. Clearly, the contents of these reviews are not reaching enough of our prospective viewers. Thus, the problem lies not with the quality of our movies but with the public's lack of awareness that movies of good quality are available. Super Screen should therefore allocate a greater share of its budget next year to reaching the public through advertising.

My essay

Super Screen-produced movies attendance

The argument stated in the paragraph does not make a very persuasive case. While its believable that a share of movie-goers may not be aware of the quality movies available at the Super Screen movies, it does not seem likely that this is the sole reason for the fewer foottfall at the cinema in the past year.

Before arriving at the conclusion that funding for advertising should be increased so that more movie goers come to know that there are quality movies available at Super screen movies, one must answer a few questions to evaluate the veracity of this assumption. First, the production company must find if any new cinema has opened in the neighborhood where Super screen movies is. It is probable that a new movie theatre with better amenities could give a stiff competition to an old movie theatre. One must also find if any existing cinema theatre in the city has, in the past year acquired better sound or picture technology or has done infrastructural renovation. Cinema viewers value the complete experience and sometimes watching a quality movie is just a part of it.

Secondly the production company must also find out if during the last year, people have been exposed to an alternate home movie watching experience for example, the blu-ray. Many erstwhile cinema goers now swear by the visual appeal of the blu-ray DVDs. They also realize that its more convenient and economical than going to a movie theatre. In such cases, usually the home movie watching increases after the advent of the new technology but when the newly aroused interest fades away, cinema lovers resume going to movie theatres. So Super screen movie should observe the trend of attendance for a few years before forming any conclusions.

Answering the aforementioned questions will help the Super screen movie to find the real cause of fewer attendees. It would prevent them from wasting money on unnecessary advertising when the real problem may lie elsewhere like improving infrastructure, amenities, technology etc.

Writing Feedback / Unsatisfying career for those who change job frequently? [3]

This essay agrees that for people who ...- very complex sentence

However, she has risen and prove, that she is dedicated to her work so now she is a headmistress of my school.
- does not require a 'however'

Permanent job can teach [...] and reliable person.- There are a lot of assumptions here but not backed by examples or evidence. Like how does one become more understanding working in one place for long. I would also assume that communication with other people would be better when changing jobs often as we are meeting new people.

Writing Feedback / Rate and comment on my argumentative essay for GRE - super screen movies [4]

Thank you for your comments and a big thanks to Holt specially for your insightful response.
I am glad that I made this mistake while practicing and not on the test day. I have indeed gone off-topic. After your response, I read ETS's sample response and found that I did not completely understand the task.

Hi Behzab,

Following is my critique of your essay:

Your essay is replete with subject-verb disagreement errors. Please use a grammatical software to make corrections. An example of this is following-

Writing Feedback / Rate and comment on my argumentative essay for GRE- Late night television news viewership decline [4]

Please provide feedback on the following argumentative essay that I have attempted in the given time frame of 30 minutes. Please comment especially in relation to whether I have fulfilled the task entailed in the prompt. Your insightful comments will be appreciated. Please refrain from pointing spelling or grammatical errors unless they are glaring. Thank you!

The memorandum from tv station

The memorandum from the television station states that to increase viewership, it should restore the time devoted to weather and local news to its former level. The argument stated in the memorandum does not make for a cogent case and is rife with assumptions not backed by solid evidence.

First, nowhere in the memorandum, it is stated that since increasing time to national news and decreasing it to weather and local news, the viewership has decreased. The television station has received complaints from viewers regarding the coverage of weather and local news but it can not be inferred from this that some or many viewers stopped watching the late night program.

Also, sufficient conclusion about the number of complaints can not be drawn from statement issued by the television station. It could be just a handful or many but we don't know from the statement alone. Also, the content of complaints is also not very clear from the statement. Whether the complainants disliked the brevity of weather and local news or its quality, we can not be sure. Further survey among the late night program viewers is required to know for sure they are really unhappy about the change of duration of the TV programs.

Second, local businesses that cancelled the advertising contract with the television station did so because of increased time to national news, is not very clear from statement. The memorandum should have included statements from the local businesses themselves to arrive at this assumption. One can also not be sure of the number of contracts that were cancelled from this statement alone.

In conclusion, strong evidence is needed to support the conclusion stated in the memorandum that time devoted to weather and local news should be restored to its former level. As it stands, the argument does not make for a persuasive case. The television station must also verify, if at all there has been a viewership decline. Only when such evidence is achieved through viewer surveys and interviews from local businesses can the argument stated in the memorandum be strengthened.

Writing Feedback / Rate and comment on my argumentative essay for GRE- Late night television news viewership decline [4]

Thank you Mary Rose. Its reviewers like you who make essayforum so valuable for us GRE takers. I noted your feedback in my earlier essay and made special effort to understand what was being asked in the essay task. If not for your feedback, I would have sped past the statement and prompt in a hurry to start writing my essay and would have probably made the same mistake again.

Thanks again for your earlier remarks!
