Scholarship / Personal Statement for Erasmus : GLOCAL Programme Global History and Creative Cities Pathway [5]

I would commend your effort on this particular discussion.
I want to draw your attention to one of the specific requirements which you did not address directly and that is: Briefly indicate what you see as being the topic of your year 2 dissertation.

More so, your first paragraph is historical and doesn't directly answer any of the prompts. Though the first paragraph implicitly states your motivation towards this programme in terms of the current status of Indonesia in Global Markets & Local Creativities, I think it should be explicit. That is, if there is any need for the first paragraph, it should be stated explicitly.

I will be posting in my thread soonest and I would appreciate your corrections and contributions as well.

Scholarship / A leader must be able to enlighten the future with new ideas and transform these for a better future [5]

@Hadeer
I must say that you have demonstrated an applicable and appreciable leadership and influencing skills as a lecturer. You should maintain these skills and keep it on this professional settings (as a lecturer) consequently, there is no need for your second paragraph emphasizing on your leadership position from childhood and at college. Without the second paragraph, your essay still carries the required professional leadership and influencing skills the prompt requires so, omit it.

Consider this grammatical structure....
In your 6th paragraph '... the teaching staff who welcomed it, and also I introduced the idea to the dean'.

Take time to go through your write up again for proper punctuation, you missed a period here and there.

MY CHOSEN THREE MSC COURSES TOWARDS AN ELECTRICAL POWER ENGINEER

The nature of epileptic power supply in my Country, Nigeria has hindered economic growth of the nation. As a graduate of electrical/electronic engineering, I have chosen three MSc courses linked with my academic background and my desire to join hands in providing strategic skills and plans that can solve this problem. I have acquired requisite knowledge and experiences in the field of electrical power engineering during my undergraduate studies. I studied electrical machines, power and machines, energy generation, transmission and distribution among other courses. My internship at an electrical power transmission company in addition to the requisite knowledge I acquired in my studies, I have the background knowledge and experiences that are geared towards the choice of my chosen University courses for a taught master degree in the UK.

My first choice of course is electrical power engineering at the University of Edinburgh. I have the plan to work with the Power industry in Nigeria hence I chose this course at the University of Edinburgh to be abreast of the most recent, cutting edge developments in Power engineering, have skills and training needed in both industrial and academic settings and to be able to tackle the problems of supplying secure, equitable and environmental sustainable energy in Nigeria. These learning outcomes are in line with the courses offered in both semesters which includes power conversion and control, technologies for sustainable energy and distributed energy resources and smart grids.

My second choice of course is energy and sustainability with electrical power engineering at the University of Southampton. Apart from my plan of considering a career in the electrical power industry, I want to become a lecturer in the discipline of Power and machines. This MSc course considers all aspects of sustainable energy generation and gives a solid grounding in the transmission and distribution of electrical power or energy. This would prepare me for a PhD in electrical power engineering and hence avail me the opportunity to become a lecturer.

Electrical Power system engineering at the University of Manchester is my third choice of courses. My desire to work in the electrical power industry and to build a career prompted me to choose this course among my chosen University courses. My aims are to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to make sound decisions in a rapidly changing electricity supply industry, to acquire a sound understanding of the principles and techniques of electrical power engineering. Most importantly, to have a broad knowledge of the issues and problems faced by electrical Power engineering in both industrial and academic settings and the solid working knowledge of the techniques to solve these problems.

Scholarship / Regarding the leadership and influence essay in the Chevening scholarship [7]

@Khaled Ebrahim
You have developed some leadership skills as shown in your essay. However, your revised essay does not sufficiently explain what the prompt requires. As pointed out by Holt, your leadership skills as the eldest among your siblings, at your primary school or during your undergraduate days are not applicable here. What's needed is your leadership skills on a professional basis. So you could write more about your job as a cashier at a restaurant, which is a role where some leadership and influencing skills comes to play. Explain how you lead people under you, the problems encountered and how you used your leadership skills to solve them, how you influenced those working with you and so on. With about two to three paragraphs, you may have been able to explain these.

I wish you best of luck!

Scholarship / Building a strong networking skills - Chevening essay on networking [3]

Please help proof read my draft on networking question - Chevening essay!

Chevening is looking for individuals with strong networking skills, who will engage with the Chevening community and influence and lead others in their chosen profession. Explain how you meet this requirement, using clear examples of your networking skills, and outline how you hope to use these skills in the future.

MY NETWORKING SKILLS

Networking which is the act of meeting new people in a business or social context does not only strengthen the relationship among the parties involved but also help in achieving maximum results in tackling problems in a professional settings.

Since I bagged a B. ENG degree in electrical/electronic engineering, I have managed to build a strong network of engineers in Nigeria. Just after my graduation, I signed a contract with an electrical installations establishment as a technical assistant. My establishment is registered under the Licensed Electrical Contractors Association of Nigeria (LECAN); a body whose roles are to ensure that materials for electrical jobs are up to standard with the required quality, and also to check the emergence of quacks in electricity works in Nigeria. My position as the team leader of a team of four technical assistants in my establishment has made me to be in regular contact with other engineers in the field of electrical engineering in the country.

I established my network by contacting the regional coordinator of LECAN in our region for a seminar/workshop on 'How to identify fake and substandard electrical materials and build a strong professional ethic' for members of my team. The seminar featured other engineers from other regions whom our regional coordinator had invited. Every member of my team had the opportunity to meet and share contacts with other professional colleagues present at the workshop. The regional coordinator whom I now have his contact and kept in touch with on regular basis invited me to a biannual regional meeting of LECAN held at the State's headquarters. At the meeting, I had the opportunity of meeting with and exchanging contacts with the National coordinator of LECAN in the North central zone hence, my network is extended.

My establishment benefited from the network I built with the National coordinator when he introduced me to the manager of Odus Electrical, Ughelli. Odus Electrical is a renowned distributor of electrical materials and appliances in Delta State. With this contact, my establishment has always had access and bought quality materials for her jobs thereby making her one of the highly sought after establishments for electrical installations job in our region in recent times.

I wish to extend this networking skills I have built and acquired over time to other Chevening scholars. I am envisaging a network where scholars in my field would be directly involved with LECAN, making useful suggestions and a possible market system where quality electrical materials could be traded thereby maintaining a solid network between the countries involved.

Scholarship / Developing Country's Airports is my long tearm goal [10]

@Sgassani
This prompt requires your immediate career plans and future terms however a large portion of your write up satisfies the studying in the UK question. Your 3rd paragraph tells us why you want a Master degree in Airport Planning or Air Transport Management, which is applicable to why you have decided to choose this course for a master degree in one of the institution you chose hence, such should come under studying in the UK question.

You ought to be direct and specific as well. In your second paragraph you wrote 'Unless I am studying for a Master Degree, it is inevitable for me to be a Civil Airside Section '. Just hit the nail on the head, something like ' I want to be a Civil Airside Section upon returning to my country' state as well how this vision relates to the what the UK government is doing in your country. Remember that you must first apply for a position before you get employed into such position; so you could start by stating that you will apply to xxx company for xxx position

Scholarship / Some examples of my networking abilities for Chevening application [4]

Arcmichael, your networking skills was centred on the skills acquired that are non professional as pointed out by Holt. However, I will be more particular with your grammatical construct. If you take time to read through your write up again after writing so you could spot these errors.

For instance your last paragraph 'In summary, with the above mentioned ... ' could be rephrased as 'With the above mentioned network abilities which I have engaged in and developed over time in addition to the various trainings I have organised I can..... '

Scholarship / Self-esteem; an important trait of a leader. Chevening essay on leadership and influence. [8]

Hello fellows, here is my first draft on the Leadership and influence question. Chevening essay. Please help proof read and give necessary correction. Thanks in advance!

Chevening is looking for individuals who will be future leaders or influencers in their home countries. Explain how you meet this requirement, using clear examples of your own leadership and influencing skills to support your answer.

(minimum word count: 100 words, maximum word count: 500 words)

A FUTURE LEADER AND INFLUENCER

The qualities of a leadership position are not far from sincerity, communication, patience, self-esteem and great charisma. These have been my watchwords since building my leadership prowess from my Senior Secondary School days. I was appointed into the prestigious position of the Sanitary Prefect in the final year of my Senior Secondary education. First I created the awareness and sensitised the students through videos, audios and pictorial displays from the World Health Organisation (WHO) on the need to have and keep a clean, healthy and disease free environment. This became a major influence in the lives of all the students and teachers alike health wise such that every student kept themselves, the School environment and their homes clean. The School was honoured with an award as the cleanest and most sanitised School in the Local Government Area after an inspection that was carried out by the Local Government Council on all Secondary Schools in the area.

I was an Intern at the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Ughelli; an electrical power station engaged in energy transmission and distribution. During my attachment at the Company, I was appointed as the leader of a team of 8 Students undergoing same internship programme. This was another opportunity for me to develop and show my leadership and influencing skills. I coordinated my team members for every job done in the field by giving relevant insights to the nature of the job(s) to be undertaken and necessary safety measures thereby allowing a free flow, and reduced man hour of the work done while working with our Superiors in the field. My active participation in jobs undertaken in the field as a team leader influenced my colleagues to be more interested on the job and participate actively as well. I organised a couple of seminars and workshops wherein Senior managers, Principal Manager and Assistant General manager of the company educated every intern on the theories behind the jobs undertaken and other necessary knowledge about the power industry.

Currently, I am working as a Mathematics and Physics teacher. I hold a B. ENG degree in electrical engineering which makes my position as a teacher in these subjects lot interesting and easy. This role gives me the responsibility to be a good influencer of the students I teach. Being a teacher in the field of science, I engage the students in practical and experimental classes on regular basis to enable them appreciate the value of the theories behind the subject. This has greatly influenced the students' ideas about science positively as the interest and enthusiasm to continue and grow into great scientists, engineers etc are propelled. Outside academic work, I am punctual to school, and teaches virtues of patience and sincerity; a display that passes the message to the students swiftly as the saying goes 'action speaks louder than voice'. These few and all important demonstration I make has not influenced the students only but also my colleagues (other teachers) who have also developed these skills with time thereby making the school an envy of neighbouring schools.

I look forward to extend this leadership and influencing skills with other Chevening Scholars to build a wonderful relationship with the rest of the world. (535 words)
