Undergraduate / Elaborate One of Your Activities - my father's golf club [2]

In the space provided below, please elaborate on one of your activities (extracurricular, personal activities, or work experience)(150 words or fewer).

In my junior year, I worked in my father's golf club-Lao Lao Bay Golf Club-as just a common worker. I served food in the restaurant, I took care of the golf shop, and worked at the counter. For this, I did not get any payment. However, I learned something very important instead-I learned the value of money.

At times I just stood at the counter or in the corner of the golf shop and studied for school when there weren't that many customers. At times I was busy, running here and there, getting golf shoes and t-shirts of various sizes. At times I was in the restaurant, taking the customers' orders and serving food. Through these hardships and experiences I learned the value of money-how my parents and other parents work to feed, cloth, and teach their children, how it is very hard to earn money.

Undergraduate / My Environment - Moving to the Philippines and to a new school [2]

Describe the environment you come from - for example, your family, community, or school - and how this environment has affected or influenced your plans for the future.

Moving to the Philippines and to a new school-an international school-changed a great deal of me, my ideas and opinions, my life, and my future. At first, I thought the people I encountered were very different and somewhat awkward. However, after three whole years of life in the contrasting environment, I found myself like the people I considered odd once.

The two main environments I have been in and that affected me are schools Korea and the Philippines. I was in Korea and attended school in Korea my whole life before I moved to the Philippines and started eighth grade in International School of Manila.

In Korea, I was-I admit-very close-minded. I was very negative on a lot of things such as people from other countries and new ideas. I did not express my feelings that well, and was not that active at all. Also, the school I attended there, like all other local Korean schools, was very strict and conservative. However, all my characteristics changed when I moved to the Philippines-to a new environment.

When I first entered International School of Manila, the first thing I noticed was the uniforms. Everybody had different colored uniforms in different forms-mini-skirts, long skirts, shorts, long pants, and so on. I thought that the color was by grades, but it turned out not. The students were free to choose the color and the form of their uniform everyday, even the Physical Education uniforms had different designs on them! I was shocked-for the uniforms in Korea looked the same, and the girls were forced to wear skirts. I think that was the first time I felt that the school I was about to attend to was freer than that in Korea. Later on, I got used to it and felt that it was all natural.

Because the school I attended to was an international school, I met a lot of friends from all over the world. Thus, my negative-ness against people from other countries besides Korea changed almost immediately. I realized that they were just like me-even if the cultures and religions might be different.

One big accomplishment that I have earned due to going to an international school in another country is the fact that I learned English. This one big-but-simple fact changed my whole life. If I had stayed in Korea, I would have just gone to a Korean university, whereas because I studied in the Philippines, I am now applying for an American school.

Undergraduate / 'passion for saxophone' - Additional Information about Myself [3]

Honestly, I did not really do well in my early high school years. My focus was on video games and computer games instead of studies. Then, gradually, I became some-what anti-social. I spent most of my free time not studying, but playing games. My attentionïinterestïwas on games and games only. However, my dad's friend who is a professional saxophone player suggested finding a hobbyïsuch as playing saxophoneïafter listening to my parents' concerns. I started saxophone right away. I wanted to get rid of my bad habit and addiction as fast as I could. I cannot explain in words how it was effective. My whole attention changed from games to saxophoneïall my time was used in practicing, practicing, practicing. Then, I felt good about myselfïI had stopped wasting my time on games. When I started feeling good about myself, I started practicingïif it was even possibleïmore. Finally, in less than half a year, I joined one of the bands in my school.

My passion for saxophone didn't end thereïit didn't end when I moved to another school with no band, strings whatsoever. I played saxophone in the school musical every single time, and even did solo pieces. As time went by, I got better and better, and that encouraged me to do even better. It's like playing in a soccer gameïone who scores, scores every time. One who knows the feeling of winning always wants to win. As I reached my goals one by one, I felt satisfied about myselfïI felt accomplished.

As soon as I started feeling that pride, I thought that I could use that same method in my studies, and I did. I started to accomplish goals little by littleïmy grades started to rise. From low grades, I started to get decent ones. But to me, the grades didn't matter. The one thing that I cared about was that I knew what was going on in class; I understood what I was taught. Like playing the saxophone, I devoted in studying, and I succeeded. Attending (school name), I am sure I can use this passionate side of me to do my best, and succeed.

Undergraduate / Inspiring Book that Changed My Life (holocausts) [2]

One of my favorite kinds of books are books about holocausts, especially stories of Jews and other ethnic and religious groups of people who were planned to be eradicated in World War II. I have read many fictions and non-fiction books about this specific event, and loved every single of them-it shows the victims' effort to retain their faith, to overcome their hardships, and most importantly, to stay alive. In both fictions and non-fiction books I always feel like I am the victim, like I am the main character struggling.

My favorite book of all the holocaust books that I've read-which I all like-is a book called Ann Frank and Me by Cherie Bonnett and Jeff Gottesfeld. I read this 282-page, 40-chapter book in just three days-I just couldn't stop reading! It's a fiction book about a girl, Nicole Burns, in the modern world going back in time to the 1940's and meeting Ann Frank face-to-face, and going back yet again to the modern world. This whole journey of the main character, while I was reading very intently, was just like a film inside my head. It sketched the problems of her-relationships between her and her family and friends, her and her family in need of food and water, and many more.

From this not-famous but inspiring book, I not only learned but felt that I am lucky to be in the 21st century-to be treated equal. Being Jewish, the main character and her family are certainly not treated equally--they are forbidden to go anywhere at anytime or do anything at all. Even if their actions are legal, they are abused and forced, by the Nazis, to go back to their house. Many of their friends are captured and deported for no particular reason, and all this just because they are Jewish. As I read this book, I imagined how I would fell if I was mistreated severely just because of my nationality or religion, or if my friends were. Through this, I understood the characters' feelings more thoroughly. Also, I learned to be thankful for what I have.

Of the many things that I learned from this book, one of them is the importance of family and friends, and how they can help incredibly. In this book, Jacque and Mimi, friends of the main character, bring food to the main character and her family very frequently. They risk their lives to come to the main character's hiding place, and give food. Also, Mimi left messages from the main character all over Paris, messages encouraging people like herself to wait and retain hope. If it weren't the main character's friends, the main character and her family would have starved to death.

This profound book also made me understood again the fact that even if might not be as beneficial, the right thing has to be done in every situation. In this book, the main character's father works in a secret group which is against Nazis, and makes bombs and other weapons. His wife, the main character's mother, tries to convince him out of this as soon as she found out-yes, the father did not tell her-but he, risking his and his family's lives, continue to be in the secret organization.

One of the many unique things about this exhilarating book is that the authors try to prove that Ann Frank and her diary is not a forgery by letting the main character meet Ann Frank herself face-to-face. Even if the book is a fiction, it clearly shows the authors' anger towards the people who are proposing that Ann Frank's diary, Diary of a Young Girl, is a fake and a made-up. I think that one of the many reasons that this particular book is my favorite book is the fact that I cannot agree more with the authors regarding the idea that the diary of Ann Frank is not real.

Undergraduate / particular life experiences, perspectives, talents, commitments [NEW]

1)The University values an educational environment that provides all members of the campus community with opportunities to grow and develop intellectually, personally, culturally and socially. In order to give us a more complete picture of you as an individual, please tell us about the particular life experiences, perspectives, talents, commitments and/or interests you will bring to our campus. In other words, how will your presence enrich our community?

In my high school life in International School of Manila and Saipan International School, I have been involved in many various clubs and activities. These four are some of them-band, sports, KCC, and ICARE.

In International School of Manila, I joined one of the school bands as a saxophone player for a year. This particular experience of being part of a band taught me cultures of music, importance of team work, and _________(i don't know what to put here). Also, in my junior year, in Saipan International School, I played solo in the annual concert.

There were many sports teams that I joined throughout my high school years, especially soccer. I joined soccer teams in both International School of Manila and Saipan International School-in many different teams, too. I joined Korean teams as a Korean, school teams, outside-of-school teams, and many more. Also, I joined not only soccer teams, but also volleyball varsity and track and field.

In International School of Manila, there is a group named KCC which stands for Korean Cultural Club. I joined KCC for two years, and it couldn't have been more educational. Being part of KCC, I visited places in need that were damaged by typhoons, and built and painted houses.

Beside KCC, there are other groups like ICARE which kindly help with the in-need people in the Philippines, and I was part of ICARE for two years. Once every _____, I visited, with all other ICARE members in school, locals with hearing and speaking problems and taught them how to write and speak basic English.

Like these various clubs that I joined throughout my high school years in two different high schools, I am ready to join many different clubs in universities and help in as many ways as I can.

Undergraduate / "Jennifer Lim" - College Application Essay [NEW]

I was just starting fourth grade when I met Jennifer Lim. Then, I had just moved to the Philippines from Korea and I knew nothing, nothing about English except the ABC's. Since I did not speak English, I was assigned ESL (Enlish as a Second Language) classes, and that is where I met her--Jennifer Lim, a person who significantly influenced me.

I walked into the ESL classroom, for the first time, with my homeroom teacher. My homeroom teacher introduced me to everyone--at least that's what I think she did--and left. Next thing I know, I was sitting with another English-speaking, not-understandable teacher talking to me. Of course, I did not understand a word, and after tries and tries, the teacher called in an English-speaking Korean student. And that, was Jennifer Lim. A tall, skinny, smart-looking girl who spoke almost perfect English. Although I did not speak English, I sensed that she was one of the favorite students of the teacher. She talked to the ESL teacher, and translated the words to me in Korean. It might have been nothing to Jennifer, but that was when I felt a rivalship between the two of us--the teacher had treated me like a baby, talking very slow, and there was Jennifer, who had fluently spoke with the teacher. When I think about it now, it seems silly--me trying and trying to beat Jennifer, and Jennifer who probably didn't even notice it. However, I think it was that very rivalship that made me do my best in not just studies, but in everything.

After I met Jennifer, I had goals. I had many goals--to study harder, to be more atheletic, to be more friendlier--to be more like Jennifer. I was desperate to be like her and everybody else. I wanted to speak infront of the whole fourth grade, I wanted to have someone, anyone, understand me when I spoke English. I recall that I always thought, "Only if I spoke English," a lot of times. I thought that I could do as much or a whole lot better if, only if, I spoke English. It was always that Jennifer was the first to answer a question, or finish an assignment. And next, Jennifer was the first student of the year who became a non-ESL student. When she did become a regular, main-stream student, I felt more desperate and worked harder.

Although I was desperate to be like Jennifer, I didn't always feel "jealous." Sometimes, I felt hopeless. I remember crying once after school in the school parking lot, telling my mother how I was the only one who didn't speak one bit of English. I couldn't imagine myself speaking or writing any of the language without a dictionary. However, with my father and mother's encouragements and my other abilities, such as math, music and Korean, I was able to be more "jealous." Now, this "jealousy" didn't lead to hatred. I had no reason to hate a person who tried hard enough, and paid the price to become a voluble English-speaker. It was more of an admirement. If I recall right, I eventually wanted to be more than Jennifer, and more than any other student. I wished, as anybody would, of being complimented and recognized. For the next few years, I studied English, and although I'm not as perfect as others, and did not learn English as fast as others, I like to think that I've reached my goals and am successful. However, surly, my studies for English will not stop till the rest of my life.

If there was no rivalship between me and Jennifer, I would never have succeeded, or at least as fast as I did. I am content that I met Jennifer and that I tried to be like her. I really want to thank her if I meet her again.
