She sings with such passion that you wish she was singing about your life. She has a voice that would belong only to angels and determination owned only by warriors. She is a Texas born hip-hop singer, who has fought for what she has and that is why Beyoncé Giselle Knowles, is my favorite musician and performer.

She started as a member of a group called Destiny's child and later moved on to form her solo career. That was her team. I believe everyone needs a team for solid foundation, to help one another advance, before they each can go solo taking with them knowledge from that team and using it. She has overcome serious depression but no matter what happens, Beyoncé never forgets to give back to the community, creating opportunities for others who could be just like her someday. People often wonder why she sings so well and in my opinion, it's all in her voice.

When Beyoncé sings she can convey any emotion she wishes properly. She uses the little voice God gave her and turns it into something much more. That is what I believe true hard work is. It means using what you have and apply it overcoming obstacles, and making it grow. That is what I intend to do at the University of Chicago. So whether I am cleaning, jogging or even cooking, listening to Beyoncé's music just empowers me; because I know the person behind the music is someone just like me.

Undergraduate / "my teacher having his own opinion" - meekness vs voice [2]

Salt, governments, beliefs, and celebrity couples are a few examples of things that can be dissolved. You've just been granted the power to dissolve anything: physical, metaphorical, abstract, concrete...you name it. What do you dissolve, and what solvent do you use?

I had a good friend Anne and in high school, it is always important to let somebody have your back and to have your friend's back so that when things get rough, you can guard each other. She stood in front of our history class one day, giving her project and the teacher did not agree with her point and harshly made it known to her. I do not know what happened to me or what I was doing at the moment, but I was greatly overcome by a sense of loyalty. So much so that I made it clear to the teacher that what Anne had said was not wrong, it was just her own opinion about the matter. I got in trouble for it, and even felt bad for having contracted an older person in front of everyone. While serving my detention after school, I could not only help but think of what I had done. I did not think of whether it was wrong or right now, but of how Anne must have felt if no one bothered to give their own opinion as well. She would have felt probably embarrassed or she could have felt empowered, to state her opinion firmly.

I do dislike my teacher for having his own opinion, but I do dislike that he tried to impose his opinion as the right one on his students. So, if I was given the power to dissolve anything in the world, I would choose to dissolve meekness. If everyone in the world had the same opinion about something, it would be the same thing as everyone having different opinions, but not having the courage to make their opinions known. I come from Cameroon in West Africa and Anne comes from Haiti. Our experiences have helped shaped our views and opinions. I may not always share the same opinion as her on a particular topic, but as long as I have a voice to speak out and tell her I disagree, it will not be known.

As my solvent for meekness, if I could I would give everyone a voice. A voice equals a chance to say what one really feels and to make a difference just by given your opinion.

Undergraduate / "born in Cameroon" - why UofC?-University of Chicago supplement [2]

How does the University of Chicago, as you know it now, satisfy your desire for a particular kind of learning, community, and future? Please address with some specificity your own wishes and how they relate to Chicago.

I was born in Cameroon, a small country along the West coast of the African continent. This has exposed me to different and diverse systems of education. It is very interesting to view someone else's opinion, as influenced by their experiences and backgrounds. This coupled with the fact that I have a twin brother, means that I have been a team player all my life as well. I envision that able to study in an environment which does not include both diversity and team work with it. The University of Chicago offers diversity to its students on campus, as it attracts students from all over the world, and also off campus with its study abroad programs, which it offers a huge variety to six different continents in the world.
