Writing Feedback / Prescribed drugs and its various effects on the body and mind [8]

well, i've been working on my introduction statement. this is so far what i got. I gave it some organization and logic.

what do you think?

Medicines are legal drugs prescribed by doctors to cure diseases or to improve an individual's life. Contradictory some of these drugs produce undesirable adverse effects that may affect negatively and differently each person. In the medical field they are also known as ADR's (Adverse drug reactions). On the one hand we have the psychological side effects caused by them. Some of the most common emotional side effects involve anxiety, mood swings, and depression. However, such unpleasant reactions vary depending on the individual's age, gender, race and many more factors. On the other hand there are as well negative physical effects that impact a patient's life when taking prescribed medications. Weight gain/loss , sexual performance issues, gastrointestinal issues, different degrees of fatigue, uncontrollable muscle tremors, vision changes are just a few of them physical side effects. At last, any human body is susceptible to suffer an adverse reaction as a direct result of prescribed medication.Just do what you read on the instructions for every medication before you take it, "Always talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any worries about possible side effects."

Writing Feedback / Prescribed drugs and its various effects on the body and mind [8]

In your text, there are drugs that have various effects on the body and mind. Research and write an essay regarding the impact drugs has on an individual's personality as well as what it does physically and emotionally.

is not completed yet, please advice of grammatical errors as well. thanks.

Prescribed drugs help people to live a healthier life. They are chemicals or substances legally approved to cure or prevent diseases. However, they also produce undesirable side effects, such, that they affect negatively an individual's mind, and body. Side effects vary upon several factors on their consumption. For example, type, amount, frequency, body size, chemistry, and mixing drugs. Nevertheless, even when doctors do not want to recognize the side effects in some of these artificial drugs, they may also cause psychological and emotional changes.

The issue arises when the side effects of some of these drugs not accepted as side effect, might need to be treated with other drugs in which case causes a vicious cycle. For example, Xanax (alprazolam) is one of the most commonly prescribed medications used in USA to treat anxiety, but few knows that it may cause depression, memory impairment, and in some cases difficulty concentrating. Halcion (triazolam) is another drug similar to Xanax, but, the duration of its sedative effect is very short making it one of the most popular sleeping pills used in the USA. However, in recent years there have been reports that Halcion may impair memory the day after people take this sleeping pill. Some others have reported even experienced a "jump back" anxiety effect after taking this medication. At last, there's no scientific way for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to keep track on the adverse reactions for this drug. So, in reality nobody knows how dangerous can this drug really is.

It happens very often that some doctors don't review a patient's medication. Instead, they add a new prescription drug to combat the side effects that are not being recognized as coming from another drug. Let's say a patient is prescribed an antidepressant to relief the blues caused by a blood pressure drug. In fact, depression and fainting are two of the most widespread side effects from antihypertensive medications. In the last few years, warnings have been part of medical journals and newspapers, along new research, indicating that overmedication and adverse reactions to medications are not just common but perhaps becoming epidemic among people of all ages. Furthermore, in recent days, a federal advisory panel voted to recommend a ban on two very popular painkillers in the entire world, "Percocet" and "Vicodin". The reason is their side effects on the liver. Both drugs combine some type of narcotic with acetaminophen, a very popular ingredient in over-the-counter products such as Tylenol or Excedrin. It is reported that high doses of acetaminophen are leading cause of liver damage. Nevertheless, acetaminophen is also combined in at least seven some other prescription drugs, and if the FDA pays close attention to the advice of experts they may be banned as well.

Any human body is susceptible to suffer an adverse reaction, as a direct result of side effects induced from prescribed medication. Weight gain/loss , sexual performance issues, gastrointestinal issues, different degrees of fatigue, uncontrollable muscle tremors, vision changes are just a few of them physical side effects.

Certain type of medications known as "Anti-rejection," may even cause a change on a patience physical appearance. These drugs decrease the response of the immune system to an organ transplant and help by preventing their rejection. Their negative side effects included, and are not limited to, puffiness, excessive hair growth, gain weight, pimples, cushingoid (change of face to a rounder shape), and swollen gums. Although, these side effects can go away after some treatment, they will still cause an amount of emotional distress on a patient. Bone loss is another side effect caused by steroids that can affect physical ability.

Writing Feedback / Should university studies be subsidized? [9]

your thesis statement is kind of weak. I think you should specify some of those benefits on the first statement too.

Writing Feedback / Ref: Analisis of instructions and procedures. [3]

This is an analysis of instructions and procedures, for my class ENC3241-Writing for Technical Professional

I need all kind of observations, this is not an essay so the rules for writing are based on the analysis format.

Analysis of the at&t Manual for the Motorola C139

The Motomanual is a clear example of a user's guide. It starts on the first page with the phone overview and an image of the front/back keypad layout. Customers can easily identify the location of most important keys and parts such as the power on/off bottom, the menu key, the battery compartment and so on.

The second page displays the content of the document in a sequential and organize way, using numbers for each procedure and bold font for the sub headings. On the third page we have the menu map where users of the Motorola C139 can see what sub options they will find on each icon on the phone menu.

The document presents a clear and transparent writing format. However, one can tell it was written in a function-oriented style, making it not always simple for the inexperienced and non-technical reader to follow the instructions. For example, the headings read 'Volume', 'Customize','Navigation key', and some more.

Who is the intended audience for using this information?

- The Motomanual is primarily intended for customers who opt for the use of prepaid phones or those who don not qualify for regular postpaid service because of their credit history. However, people who buy them as a cheap replacement option are an indirect audience.

- The manual has been also compiled considering a Spanish speaker audience, on one side of the document we have the English version and if you flip it over on the opposite side is the Spanish version.

What is the purpose of this document?

- The purpose of the Motomanual is to provide information about all the features of the phone such as voice message, text message, multimedia message, media net, and some others.

- It also gives details about the functionality this Motorola phone posses, for example it tells about the calendar, flashlight, add a new event as well as other specifications.

- The Motomanual purpose is ultimately to give to all audiences the step by step directions in the use of these features and functions.

Which guidelines for organizing instructions are present and which ones are missing?

- This documents contains all components for writing a document of instruction and procedures. From the title MOTOMANUAL all the way to the troubleshooting.

- The procedures and instructions are listed and numbered which makes it easy for the reader to follow the sequence of directions.

- The headings and subheadings are writing in a classic bold style to differentiated from the instructions.

- The table of contents have been organized by similar types of information, for example, use and care of the phone, essentials, basics, main attractions, customize functions, call features, other features, troubleshooting and index. The number of steps for each instruction are limited to less than ten as Woolever specified.

- The Manual also uses a special note at the beginning of each instruction called 'Find it:'. Such note is followed by the graphic that identify the bottom on the keypad and the sequence of options they must select to perform an specific function on the Motorola

- I think the document is losing points on the fact that was not entirely written in a task-oriented way.

What is the document's relationship to other document or screen interface?

- The Motomanual has a close relationship to its online version found on the at&t wireless website, known as the device tutorial. The tutorial is a set of three instructional modules designed in a drop down box style. The instructions also includes very crucial screen shots. The user can easily navigate between procedures by moving up or down with the click of the mouse. The screen shots make it easy for the non-technical customers to know where they are at when performing a task.

- This tutorial also gives customers a more dynamic assistance with procedures for basic troubleshooting. If a reader cannot send or receive a text message on his/her Motorola C139 phone, then device tutorial will give them the steps to follow for some basic troubleshooting and hopefully resolve the issue. At the end of the instructions for troubleshooting the reader will find a note stating that if the issue is not resolved then to contact customer care.

Is the author of this manual writing on any specific style that Woolever recommends?

- The rhetorical strategy developed is quite effective, simple but not oriented to the non-technical reader. The instructions are written in a function-oriented format oppose to what Woolever recommends. They may not be so easy to follow for the inexperience user.

- Perhaps, elderly people who are not very good with following instructions specially if it is new technology. For example, Woolever recommend to write the heading as to, 'How to change a ring-tone?", and instead the book just do it as to 'my tones".

- The approach used in this manual to define a technical problem is to rephrase the issue as a question. A clear example is located in the troubleshooting section.

What changes need to be made, if any, to this set of instructions or procedures?

- I think one of the changes that should be made is perhaps to extend the introduction and to move it from page eight to the first or second page.

Undergraduate / An Art student's Personal Statement for UCLA's Art and Designs [5]

I think your introductory thesis statement is kind of weak.

You could try something like this:

"As I grew up I enjoyed art very much. I was very creative and had great interest in all kinds of art. "

I guess you can re-arrange what you have already wrote from here.

Good luck!

Undergraduate / how has your family influenced who you are? UCF admission essay [NEW]

Please, tell me all i'm doing wrong in my paper. I have to submit my application for xfer today.

My parents had an important influence in the kind of person I am now. Respect, moral values, good manners are just some of the principles they have implanted on me as I grew up. Undoubtedly, I was raised the old fashion way. However, I still have a long way to go if I want to be as wise as my father , and so determined as my mother. I realize now that all their actions in the past to correct my misbehavior were not pointless, part of my personality is the result of their influences. I am a good father, a good husband, and most important I am a man of values and principles.

My dad is man of good sense, and I cannot take that from him. 'Don Benjamin,' as we call him, may not be a perfect father, but he is the best father of all. In one hand, my father was a very strict, and overprotective. I've cried many nights during my teenage-hood because he would not allow me to go out with my friends. But, in the other hand, he would taught me how to be self-sufficient, how to be honest, how to be responsible, and most important how to be respectful to others. Women get surprise to find out that I know how to cook, to wash dishes, to do laundry, to iron my cloth, to sew, to clean the house, and I tell them that I got it from my father. My dad thinks that he is got to keep working to support all of us. It is amazing that when I see myself working until late night, sometimes even weekends and holidays, it is like seeing my father. One day I asked him, why at your age, 65 years old, you still have to work so much, then he replied, "because the day I die, I want to leave certain that your mother and all of you will not be unsupported. My dad spent quality time with us too, and he proved to me that working hard is not an excuse to unattended the family. He make us enjoy every gathering and family time that we had. Undoubtedly, I am grateful to have my father as my mentor.

Determination is one of my mom's a quality that it is still hard for me to obtain. She always achieve whatever she proposed to get, and always finished any task she started. She says to me all the time, 'don't be a mediocre, no matter how long it takes, get it done.' I am 38 years old, and I have the firmness intention to earn my bachelor degree, even if it takes more than the two years I have left. It is not only self pride, I am also doing it because of her. My mother has always been a woman of big patience. Can you imagine what it is to raise six kids while my father was working? I truly admire her for that devotion. I go crazy when I have to baby sit my two kids all by myself. Melva, my mother, is also a woman of action. She says, 'don't' think too much, just do it." Anyway, I still cannot get that right ,and I think way to much when it comes to makes decisions. I can clearly recall every argument my parents had when as a child and a teenager. Either my mother wanted to get me enroll into karate lessons or into the most exclusive private schools. My father would say there are other options that are less expensive, but she wanted it that way. I cannot blame my father anyway, I have four brothers and one sister, it is hard to keep up a financial stability with everyone's demand. At the end I got the karate lessons, and I got to study in one of the most exclusives private institutions in my country. I salute my mother.

Life has taught me that without the influence of both my parents, I do not know where I would be today. But, one thing is for sure about me, 'like parents, like son.'

Undergraduate / Obstacles or 'bumps in the road in your academic or personal life [4]

1- if there has been some obstacles or "bump in the road" in your academic or personal life, please explain the circumstances.

Please , i need some advices about what is wrong with my essay, grammar, structure, etc. what needs to be corrected? thanks

There are obstacles in my academic, and personal life that make it hard for me to be a successful person. I have to fight with my own insecurities. I have to overcome issues with my health. I have to confront social discrimination. But, life goes on, and those 'bumps' are just part of life. I'm still learning how to deal with them as I get more mature. I know what I have to do, when, and how. I guess is call "building self-confidence".

To fight my own insecurities is the hardest test in life. I constantly change my mind about what is the right thing to do, or what is the best decision to make, or when is the right time to do it. To quit my current job is one of those hard decisions that I have to consider every day. I'm not sure if will be able to find a better job in today's day. The rate of unemployment is so high, and the economical crisis don't help at all. Buying a house was another hard decision I had to made a couple of years ago, because I was afraid of not being able to keep up with the mortgage. Unfortunately, I'm loosing my house but not because I made the wrong decision, but because of the economical crisis going on. I get some relief about it.

To Improve my health is another challenge in my life. In the last year or so my health has gone really bad. I've been diagnosed with migraines, hypertension, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, chronic sinus, anxiety, and allergies to all type of weeds and dust. I'm working hard to improve my quality of life. I had to drastically change my eating habits. I had to quit drinking and smoking cigars too. In addition, I must take a cocktail of pills every morning to get cure. I accept that to go back to school won't be either an easy task for me, specially with the migraines I get every day. Headaches make it hard for me to concentrate and to study. But, I keep a positive attitude and I'm confident that against all odds I will get better.

Social discrimination it's an issue that I face as an immigrant everyday. Every where I go I have to deal with people over looking at me and my family when we choose to speak Spanish in public places. I also must recognize that to be bilingual gives me the chance to find more job opportunities, however , to speak with certain accent in this country is yet not acceptable by other Americans. For example, I work in a call center and I've noticed that some customer won't talk to me when they notice my accent, or when they hear my last name. Some customers are even more aggressive and hang up to call back hoping to speak the next time with someone else. It doesn't bother me anymore.

Finally I got to the conclusion that obstacles in life are there just to make you the best in what you do. After all the final decision to be successful is within oneself.
