Writing Task 2 (an essay)

Nowadays, many people go shopping in their free time. Shopping has replaced many other activities that people choose as their hobby. What are the reasons for this? Is this a positive or negative development?

Answer:

With the advent of ecommerse, the way people shop has changed a lot over the last few years. The plethora of online webstores that made their way into the online market have revolutionized the way people shop. It is not only online shopping, but live shopping has also changed a lot with globalization. Nowadays retail giants like Wallmart have setup business in many developing countries and are making good business. With these latest trends shopping has become a hobby for many. Reasons for the same will be discussed before analyzing the positive and negative aspects of the same.

Online shopping has become very easy and convenient with the use of high speed internet. Now at the comfort of their homes, people can sit before the computer, browse through different products and order them at the click of a mouse. They no longer have to drive through the busy markets and stand in a queue to buy the items. Furthermore, trying out new things is always exciting and the easiness of doing that adds to the pleasure.

For instance, a recent study revealed the fact that the selling of books has gone up considerably after Flipkart, a popular webstore in India, started selling books for huge discounts. This has improved the book business and contributed positively for the industry. However, shopping has some negative aspects as well. Sometimes shopping can become an addiction for many, especially youngsters where they spend a lot of money than is actually required. For instance, many beauty products are advertised with false claims to attract teenagers which is a bad trend. After analyzing the above factors it is clear that shopping has positive and negative aspects.

To conclude, shopping aided by the latest trends in technology has made the lives of people easier. After analyzing the pros and cons it is agreed that fast and effective shopping is good for the economy of the country as well as the people. Writing Feedback / IELTS, Should government pay for looking after old aged people [3]

Q: In India when someone gets old they often go to live in a a home with other old people where there are nurses to look after them. Sometimes government has to pay for this care. Who do you think should pay for this case, the government or family?

Give reasons for you anser and include any relevant examples from your own experience.

Answer:

In today's fast paced world, looking after old age people has become a matter of very serious concern. Government in many states run old age homes where the old age people are taken care of and the government itself pays for this. Many people argue that this is the right thing to do, while some contend that it is the responsibility of the young to look after their parents when they get old. Both sides of the argument will be critiqued before a well reasoned conclusion is drawn.

It is believed by a section of the society that their parents; when they get old , should be looked after by the government. An idea that supports this is the fact that a minority of India's population is below the poverty line and they lack the financial capacity to look after their old aged parents. It can be argued that this trend may continue due to the economic crisis that the country is going through at the moment where the day-to-day life is getting very expensive. Thus, the argument that the responsibility of the old aged people should be taken by the government is difficult to debunk.

On the contrary, many people believe that it is the duty of the family to take care of old aged people. For example, people who are rich can employ a home nurse for this purpose. Moreover, the moral values upholded by Indian culture insist that the parents should be protected by their children when they get old. Thus, the additional financial burden on the government would naturally decrease. After analyzing the fact, it is clear that why many people support this claim.

To sum up, after analyzing both the points of view, as the majority of the Indian population are rich and they pay lot of importance to moral values the argument that old age people should be taken care of by the government cannot be supported at all. Moreover, in future, the children should be taught that its their duty to take care of their parents when they get old.

Writing Feedback / IELTS, Doctor nurses and teachers should be paid more than celebrities [7]

Question
Professional workers like doctors, nurses and teachers make a greater contribution to society and so should be paid more than sports and entertainment personalities. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Answer

Healthcare is one of the major job sectors where, people can contribute to the welfare of the society. Doctors are treated like God by many and they are respected more by the society, compared to people working in other areas. It is agreed that, healthcare professionals should be given higher salary compared to celebrities. This argument will be proven by analyzing the kind of higher responsibility medical job demands, the amount of time a doctor or nurse works and the academic knowledge they have to possess.

Firstly, doctors and nurses are directly dealing with human life and so the risk and responsibility involved in treating a patient is very high compared to other jobs. For instance, a patient who is undergoing a critical surgery for a serious illness has a high possibility of death and the doctor has to be extra cautious while performing the surgery. As can clearly be seen from the example, healthcare professionals are supposed to show more care and responsibility as the job demands. This shows that they are qualified for a high pay for the nature of their job.

It is also a known fact that, doctors and nurses do not work for a fixed time frame. They are required to be present for an important surgery depending on the condition of the patient or sometimes they would have to overstretch beyond their normal working hours. Healthcare professionals are also academically brilliant and they are supposed to be abreast with the latest treatment methodologies and new medicines and medical practices. All the above factors lead to the fact that their job demands high salary for the effort they make.

To conclude, after analyzing the facts pertaining to healthcare jobs like responsibility, risk etc and also the academic knowledge a doctor should possess it is clear that they have every right to get a more pay than celebrities. It is expected that the high salary will attract more and more young people to pursue a career in health field.

Writing Feedback / IELTS; Effects of Technology on traditional role of classroom teacher [7]

This is a very serious question. I have asked it another thread also. As far as I understand there are two types of essays
1. Argument
2. Discussion

In Argument essay you are asked to agree or disagree and then write supporting ideas. The outline is this

Introduction(here you say whether you support or refute)
Paragraph 1 one for supporting/refuting idea1
Paragraph 2 for supporting/refuting idea2
Conclusion

In a discussion essay you are asked to discuss and then give an opinion. Here the outline goes like this

Introduction(he you must mention and idea for and idea against the topic)
Point of view 1 in favor of topic
Point of view 2 against the topic
Conclusion(here you give your opinion whether you support POV1 or POV2)

I would like to know id anybody disagree on this?

Writing Feedback / IELTS A 2 "Are violent games responsible for the increased violence in major cities" [7]

One minor correction rather a question

I believe "nowadays" is one word

I have a genuine question regarding the way this type of essay should be written. In the first para itself you have given that you disagree. So instead of saying that the role of video games is minor in the third para, wont it be better to discuss another topic which is in favour of your argument. My idea is

Intro
Favoring topic 1
Favouring topic 2
Conclusion

Instead of

Intro
For
Against
Conclusion

Writing Feedback / IELTS; Effects of Technology on traditional role of classroom teacher [7]

Question:
The presence of technology in the classroom has become more and more apparent and offers students tremendous resources to supplemet their education.Given time, technology will completely replace the traditional teacher in the classroom. Do you agree or disagree?

Answer:

In the present age, technology is playing an increasingly important role in everyday life. Education is one of the major areas which has been heavily influenced by technology. It is refuted that technology will replace the role of teachers in classrooms. This will be proven by analyzing how teacher can cater to the day-to-day needs of the students and how they can motivate and discipline them.

A very important aspect of teaching is how the teacher can adapt the teaching style by live interaction according to the need of the students. For instance, Maths is a subject which is difficult for some students. If the student feels any difficulty in the subject, the teacher can explain the subject in detail. This flexibility is not possible with a computer as, the computer is programmed in advance. Thus, technology cannot replace teachers in classrooms.

Motivation and discipline are two factors which as very key to success in any student's life. For instance, the teacher can motivate the students by giving advices or suggesting morals from good stories and discipline them according to the character of the student. This kind of interaction is not feasible with a technology based teacher. Analyzing the above fact, it is clear that technology is no a substitute for a teacher.

Following the analyzation of a teacher's ability to provide guidance to the day-to-day demands of the students as well as their power to to guide them towards success, it is clear that technology will never replace the role of teachers in the classroom. It is expected that technology can work along with the teacher and help them in fulfilling the job of a teacher in classroom.
