It sounds as if you are on your way! The only my only suggestion work on keeping everything in the present tense( this makes it sound more exciting).
Example:
At times I failed to capture some shots, and that's when I learned to make the most of what I had.
Times when I fail to capture some shots is when I learn to make the most of what I have.
Its not a very easy thing to do, I even struggle with it in my essays.
