Undergraduate / My parents had sealed my fate - I would grow to be a Chartered Professional Accountant [2]

My parents had sealed my fate when I was only a toddler - I would grow to be a Chartered Professional Accountant. I readily accepted and cherised that thought. Surely, my parents would knowthewhat was best for me. When the time for university admissions approached, I knew exactly what I wanted to do: The Accounting Specialist and economics major at the University of XXX. However, with each passing second, Ifind found in myself a greater interest for economics and simultaneously an increasing distate for accounting. sounds a little funny As my third semester approchescame to an end, I have decided that I wantedno longer wanted to pursue a career in economics notor accounting. At the same time I have comecame to the realization that the my University of XXX doesdid not fulfill my academic needs due to three simple reasons.

FirstlyFirst of all , the Commerce program at my university is highly structured - s tudents may take only two credits outside of their degree requirements. Even then, students are restricted from enrolling in several courses. A commerce student, for instance, can not enroll in a sociology course. As an aspiring Accountant, I found this depth to be quite fitting since all my courses were designed to obtain the CPA.Had a hard time understanding what you ment However, as an aspiring economist, I believe a liberal arts education, as opposed to a career- oriented education, will better fit my goals and objectives as I plan to opt for sociology, literature, philosophy etc. courses alongside economic courseswhy?? Why would these classes help you? .

Secondly, the courses themselves are too structureduse another world . There is little to no room for dicussions, creativity, and outside the box thinking. My Proffessors can neither incorporate their own research into lectures nor can they spend reasonable time on real world examples - The focus, thus far, has been on mostly theory and theoretical analysiswhay does that matter to you?? How would it help if they were allowed to? .

Thirdly, due to limited student enrollment, the economics specialist program is not as well funded as the accounting specialist program, or even the finance specialist program for that matter. Most events and competitions are accounting or finance based, so are most of the information and recruitment sessions.I would take this out and elaborate more on the things I mentioned before

As a transfer, I seek a new environment where I can freely develop upon my passion for economics and satisfy my thirst for knowledge.

Your intro was fabulous!!
Still needs to be polished though.
Best of luck to you!!

Undergraduate / Fascination for the human body and a career in medicine - UC Prompt 1 [3]

I am concerned that my essay isn't engaging enough and would love any input!! Please be harsh! I also want to make sure that I answered the question effectively. Thanks!

What is your intended major?

HUMAN BODY FASCINATION

Fascinated with the human body and wanting to pursue a career in medicine, I decided to study biology at East Los Angeles College (ELAC). As I dove into the subject and began taking different biology courses, I was mesmerized by the human developmental pathway- how a human-being starts off as a single cell, a cell so small yet so complex, that given the proper conditions and time will give rise to a human being ready to be born. I was also amazed how within us lies a world composed of billions of cells all operating in perfect harmony and within every cell is a chemical blueprint dictating the chemical pathways responsible for our development. It is this branch of biology that excites me and has lead me to pursue a degree in molecular and cellular biology.

As I began college, I sought after a community of students who aspired to make a difference in their community, through the use of medicine. Not finding one, a group of friends and I decided to start a pre-med club on campus, Chicanos Latinos for Community Medicine (CCM). From the start of the club, I have had the fortune of being elected co-chair, a position that has provided me opportunities for professional development, such as organizing ELAC's first health fair and pre-med conference. Although, I have yet to become a physician, these two events have allowed me to serve my peers and community by providing resources that they may have otherwise not received. Providing others with help has offered a glimpse into the future, allowing me to see the kind of impact I can make on my community once I become a physician.

In addition to CCM, I also participated in the Math, Engineering, and Science Association (MESA) program. As I immersed myself in the program, I was offered many opportunities to travel to a variety of conferences, such as the New England Research Symposium, and the American Medical Student Associating convention. Not only did they expose me to the different fields of medicine, but they also revealed a world I had not known, where medicine and research come together as one. Wanting to experience research first hand, I decided to take part in Bridges to the Future, a research internship at the California State University of Los Angeles, where I worked in a Bio-Chemistry Laboratory for Dr. Robert Vellanoweth. My project was to manipulate bacterial cells to produce a plant protein, which I was able to undertake successfully. At the end of the summer I was able to showcase my work in three different symposiums, events that expanded my goal of not only becoming a doctor but a researcher as well.

Through these experiences, I have obtained an eclectic collection of skills. I have learned how work in a team efficiently, conduct myself professionally, organize events successfully, and mange my time effectively, skills that I plan to utilize and expand upon once I transfer. In addition to these skills, my involvement in clubs, programs, and research have given me a taste of what the real world will be like and all the challenges and responsibilities that come with being a successful leader. Having experienced this has allowed me to acquire the confidence and motivation in helping me transfer, which is the next step in achieving my goal of becoming a successful medical researcher.

Undergraduate / "Destination reached!" We had entered Pilani - home to one of the top engineering colleges in India. [2]

"Destination reached!" voiced the GPS device in the car!. It was a dark cloudy day ofin the month of July. Sitting in the back seat of the car, my eyes were focused on what was to come. After a six-hour drive from the city of Jaipur, we had entered a village, Pilani. It is home to one of the top engineering colleges in India, BITS Pilani. As we entered the lush green campus, we lost our way.sounds a little funnyi would suggest combining the two sentences just put a "," It was a very large campus after all! With some help from strangers, we reached the admissions office. I was asked to fill upout a few paper forms; smile for the camera to get a photograph clickedtaken? for my id card, and allotted a room in one of the hostels.

As the first day of August rolled out, I was college bound, whether I was ready or not. I was no longer walking past familiar faces in the hallway. To put it plainly, I was lonely. I was homesick. My first year has been a time of transition as it is for most college freshmen. All my decisions were taken away from the familiar support structures of both home and high school. As a result, I have developed a greater sense of my abilities, both academic and social. I have to say this paragraph might not work in your favor. It makes me wonder if this might happen again once you transfer. You might want to re-write it in a way that makes me feel more like you know how to better handle the situation?

I am pursuing a double major in Mathematics and Chemical Engineering. I spent a lot of time in my freshmen year learning computer science. I took up courses on 'Coursera' and 'edX', and enjoyed watching Professor David Malan teach 'CS 50' at Harvard University. Back in high school, I was one of those computer geeks who coded a website for my class back in 8th grade, and created a program which I called the 'Differentiator' in 12th grade. It could differentiate any mathematical function given to it. This is great! I would actually like to hear more. It would show that you have initiative and that you also truly do have a passion for you career since you stated at a young age. As I mentioned before, you might want to delete the previous paragraph and elaborate more on this one

I spent the summer break reading about computer networks and cryptography. I tweaked routers and switches, set up a LAN on my own and configured firewalls. I learnt about the 'Heartbleed bug' that exploits vulnerability in openSSL and played around with 'Kali Linux', a distribution of Linux designed for penetration testing. The Internet is gettingbecoming omnipresent, and the importance of cyber security is growing. TheThis had lead me to the realization of what I want to do in my lifeand it has been very satisfying. There was one barrier though. I wanted to major in computer science. With some introspection, I believe a change is necessary.I don't really understand what you mean. It seems very vague. What kind of change must be made? What is the barrier?

I have been a big fan of the ACES program at UMD. Although I believe I want to learn the 'breadth' of computer science first, and then the 'depth'. I know that by transferring, I will be able to explore my passion among others who share a similar interest. I will have the opportunity to take variety of classes within my major, while also getting internships and conducting research within the field. I have made my decision to attend a new school wholeheartedly. I'm not scared; I'm ready and enthusiastic. I've grown since that dark, July day; I'm ready to start a new chapter. I don't feel like this is a strong enough ending. I think you should re-write it in a way that will showcase why transferring will help you get to where you want. Maybe talk about potential research projects and professors you plant to work with. Let the admissions directors know how their school in particular will help you (you mentioned classes, I'm pretty sure other schools offer the same classes if not then be specific about that) and how you plan to contribute as well. Hope this helps!

Undergraduate / Discipline; At the time, I was unaware of my father's drug and alcohol addiction - UC Prompt #2 [7]

I have fixed it up a little more. Let me know what you think. I feel as though it's a little too long, like if it drags on a little?

Self-discipline is the most important attribute one needs to acquire in order to achieve personal excellence whether it be in the arts, athletics, or academia. It is a unique quality that allows its possessor to become limitless, allowing them to achieve anything they set their mind to, no matter the trials and tribulations that may come their way. Discipline has shown me that I am capable of learning and understanding complex concepts on my own, sparking a new found interest in higher education. I have come to learn that obtaining a higher education is the key that will not only allow me to expand my academic horizons, but will also unlock a world in which I could live freely and fearlessly.

Growing up, I was unaware of my father's drug and alcohol addiction, but I now know that it was the culprit that led to his paranoia and violent behavior. In his desperate attempt to protect my sisters and I, he removed anything that connected us to the outside world. He not only disposed of our television, computer, and telephone but he also took us out of school so that he could homeschool us, thus allowing him to have complete control. Little did he know, he would become the danger that he was so desperately trying to protect us from. Although I would never want to relive the horrifying moments in which my father's violent outbursts grew out of proportion, I would never change the terrifying experiences, for it was through these experiences that I found my true potential.

Both of my parents, having only graduated from high school, and knowing little English, were not academically equipped to teach my sisters and I, leaving the responsibility of learning solely on us. Overwhelmed with the madness that surrounded me, and feeling desperate for an escape, I engaged myself in books. It was in them that I was able to escape the chaos and pain that surrounded me. I began to arduously push myself to learn with the scarce materials I was provided and I soon became the most critical teacher I had ever had. Books not only provided me with an outlet, but the discipline that I gained allowing me to learn on my own was empowering. Discipline has proven to be a vital quality that has and will continue to allow me to excel academically.

As I embark on this new academic journey of transferring to a university, I know I will be faced with new academic struggles and challenges. However, I also know that I will be able to surmount them as I have overcome other challenges. Having gained discipline has shaped me into a woman willing to persevere at all costs. I am committed to sticking to my goal of obtaining a higher education, and will not allow anything to alter the path I have chosen. It is this quality that I am most proud of, and I know that discipline will be a critical component to my success in my future academic and career endeavors.

Undergraduate / The element I endear most about the band room is that there are no rules set to follow [2]

This is where art is created, where music flows through my veins and making my heart beat to the rhythm of a song.

I forget the demands everything I have to accomplish that day and I can just focus on that one task. Sounds a little funny

It might sound crazy to some, but I feel as though? music has helped me get through so much in my life, in a different way than no human could?

I think it's very good. However, I do have to say that I would have loved it if you could have made me feel what you felt while you were in the band room. I think an essay stands out the most if you can get the reader raped up in your emotions. Hopefully others will chime in and give you more advice. It's a great essay over all =]

Graduate / After the nuclear meltdown happened , I shockingly viewed the #Fukushima trend on twitter [8]

In my sophomore year I co-created a Model UN conference , first of its kind to be held in the NITs, with a vision of starting a new community where students can discuss and debate global current affairs within the framework of the? UN

We were well aware that our event would not attract any of those students as it didn't offer neither the geeky fame of tech events nor the glamour of the dance and fashion shows.

However we took it as a challenge and made an action plan for how our event must grow over the next 3 years.

We linked our event with the college cultural festival for the coolness factor and the extra awareness the festival would bring to it .

Sorry I couldn't contribute as much. However, i do feel that your essay shows that you are a person with initiative and great leadership skills! Good Luck!

Undergraduate / Discipline; At the time, I was unaware of my father's drug and alcohol addiction - UC Prompt #2 [7]

Please be harsh!! I would like to know if you feel like I answered the question and did not get off topic. Any advice is also appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

Question:
Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud, and how does it relate to the person you are?

At the time, I was unaware of my father's drug and alcohol addiction, but I now know that it was the culprit that led to his paranoia and violent behavior.
