The world faces significant environmental challenges including increasing temperatures, waste generation, global warming, and resource depletion, all of which threaten the survival of species and the Earth's longevity. Growing up in Karachi, I experienced firsthand the severe heatwaves and monsoon urban floods that disrupted lives around me. These experiences, combined with my academic journey, have developed a strong resolve within me to pursue environmental engineering and land planning. I am motivated to contribute to addressing both the health and financial implications of these environmental and planning concerns, recognizing the role an engineer has to play to mitigate such challenges.
During my undergraduate studies in Civil Engineering at NED University of Engineering and Technology, I maintained a strong academic profile with fourth position with a CGPA of 3.619 and cultivated a deep interest in sustainability. My final year project, 'Mapping and Assessment of Urban Heat Island Effect (UHIE) in Karachi,' exemplified this commitment. Using tools like ARC GIS, we analyzed contributing factors to UHIE, developed a factor grading matrix based on severity, and proposed mitigation strategies unique to Karachi. This project filled a critical research gap, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 11, and provided satisfaction as to be able to help the city mitigate temperature variations.
My research interests extended beyond academics. I co-authored two research papers, including 'Manhole Related Road Accident Prevention Using Sustainable Methods' under departmental professors' guidance, where I proposed practical solutions to minimize road hazards. I also conceived the startup idea 'CleaNED,' aimed at repurposing campus waste into renewable products like tire-based seating while quantifying waste generation. Although the project did not materialize, the experience sharpened my entrepreneurial mindset. Additionally, participating in seminars and conferences specially 'Utilization of Biofuels in the Transportation Sector in Pakistan'
I gained practical insights from my internships at EA Consulting and Traffic Police Office, where I analyzed reports on environmental and social aspects of urban development, particularly in the construction of an expressway in Karachi, in line with SDGs, and worked on improving road infrastructure by designing crash diagrams with solutions, respectively. Furthermore, visits to water treatment plants as part of my undergraduate courses enhanced my understanding of techniques for treating effluent water for drinking and commercial purposes. These visits also briefly introduced me to the Industry 4.0 concept, with the use of glass fused steel tank to minimize carbon footprint and prevent corrosion being particularly innovative to me.
What distinguishes me is my leadership journey in addition to excellent academic performances, particularly as General Secretary of ITE NEDUET, where I organized initiatives like the inaugural workshop for the Toyota Road Improvement Project in Karachi. This workshop focused on identifying road hazards, devising solutions, and bringing stakeholders together to a common cause. During my other roles in student societies, I organized software and first-response safety training workshops as well as initiated write ups, which improved team engagement. These soft skills gained from student clubs will be valuable for me in my pursuit of a Master's degree abroad.
Politecnico's interdisciplinary approach to Environmental and Land Planning Engineering deeply resonates with my academic and professional goals. The program's emphasis on hydraulics, river engineering, and sustainable land-use planning aligns perfectly with my interests and experiences. Courses such as groundwater hydraulics, soil remediation, and urban renewal reflect my aspiration to address challenges like water scarcity, waste management, and urban resilience. I am particularly excited to engage in research that explores innovative solutions in environmental systems analysis and solid waste management, contributing to sustainable urban development.
In addition, my broader interest in civil engineering makes Politecnico my ideal choice for pursuing advanced studies. I am inspired by the university's academic excellence and research ecosystem, which I believe will provide the perfect platform to expand my expertise. I aim to collaborate with faculty members engaged in cutting-edge research, particularly those focusing on sustainable urban systems, to develop solutions that can be implemented in cities like Karachi.
My long-term vision is to contribute to Pakistan's environmental transformation by designing sustainable systems that improve resource management and urban infrastructure. With the knowledge and expertise gained at Politecnico di Milano, I aspire to pioneer projects that enhance waste-to-energy conversion, mitigate urban heat islands, and elevate living standards in developing nations.
Politecnico di Milano is not just an academic destination for me but a catalyst for my aspirations. I am confident that my academic foundation, practical experiences, and leadership qualities will enable me to contribute meaningfully to the program and the university community. In return, I hope to gain the skills, insights, and networks needed to drive sustainable change globally and locally.
