Motivation Letter for a BA in psychology for the stipendium hungaricum scholarship
Dear Admissions Committee,
How I Became Interested in Psychology
My curiosity began with a family mystery. I watched my uncle, who was suffering from severe heart issues and shivering with fever, reject modern medicine for a "spiritual syrup" from a mystic. His recovery was rapid and miraculous. While my family saw a divine miracle, my later research revealed it to be the placebo effect. I was amazed that a mind convinced of healing could literally command the body to recover. This sparked a relentless curiosity: if we fully understand our brain's mechanisms, what else can we achieve?.
Why This Profession is Suitable for Me
I possess an analytical mindset honed through A-Level Physics and Mathematics. I view the brain as a complex, logical system that can be decoded through quantitative evidence. My aptitude for metacognition-observing my own thoughts to resolve cognitive biases-proves my suitability for this field. For instance, I once used self-analysis to realize that my irrational aversion toward a friend was actually a projection of past insecurities, which allowed me to restore our friendship through conscious awareness.
My Aim with the Psychology BA Degree
I aim to build a scientific foundation to transition from curiosity to evidence-based practice. I am currently researching how the cognitive-emotional load caused by social media consumption contributes to depressive symptoms in adolescents. I intend to use this degree to master the statistics and research methods necessary to quantify these neural impacts.
My Future Career and Further Studies
I am primarily interested in Cognitive Psychology and Neuroscience-my career has been as a high-level researcher investigating the brain's secrets alongside global experts. Following my BA, I plan to pursue a Master's degree at institutions such as Stanford or Johns Hopkins. Ultimately, I will establish a research organization in Pakistan to break the taboo that psychology is only for "mental patients," providing scientific, data-driven awareness for Gen Z.
How the ELTE Programme Relates to My Future Plans
I have chosen ELTE because Pakistan's curriculum lacks the experimental infrastructure I require, often prioritizing rote learning over research. ELTE is my first choice due to its EuroPsy accreditation and the opportunity to work in the Brain, Memory, and Language Lab. Utilizing EEG technology at ELTE will provide the international-standard training necessary to transform the mental health landscape in my home country.
