applying for the Master Degree - my motivation and further plans
I (XYZ) recently earned a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from XYZ University. I am writing this letter to express my strong motivation in applying for the Master Degree of Mechanical Engineering with the major module of "Thermal Engineering" at your esteemed "XYZ University" as well as a description of my plans during my studies in Hungary.
After completing my Pre-Education I have decided to do my Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering. For this purpose, I started Preparing for Engineering Colleges Admission Test (ECAT) and have obtained 350/400 in the entrance exam and secured a seat in the Mechanical Engineering Department of XYZ University. Fortunately, my university was located near Pak-Arab Fertilizer which is Pakistan's 4th largest fertilizer producing industry due to which our university arrange frequent visits to this industry, which helps me to gain a close look at the working of machines and the applications of subjects which I was studying. These visits enabled me to score high marks in practical labs.
Studying courses at an undergraduate level like Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Heat and Mass Transfer, Power Plants, HVAC, Energy Resources and Utilization developed in me a keen interest how these subjects put into practice which naturally pursues in me a quest of learning and research. Because of my great interest in these subjects, I decided to work on a Bachelors Final Year Thesis Titled: "Experimental Investigation of Thermal Performance of Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustors" in which, I and other three group mates started working on effectively utilizing the blends of lignite coal with high-grade of coal such as Bituminous coal. Burning and effective utilization of lignite coal was a big challenge for us as lignite is a low-grade coal and has low calorific value and high moisture and volatile content so, it is difficult to burn it in conventional pulverized coal-fired combustors. So we decided to burn it in a CFB combustor which is a good alternative to conventional combustors with low pollutant emission. Our Head of Department was the supervisor for this project and helped us a lot in achieving our project goals. The overall objective of this project was the utilization of Pakistan's local coal reserves, which are mostly lignite coal. Moreover, Pakistan's energy infrastructure is considered to be underdeveloped and poorly managed. Currently, the country is facing a severe energy crisis and no serious efforts have been made to install new capacity of generation. So, it is my interest to excel in the fields of renewable energy resources and the installation of new power plants, which would help my country overcome its energy crisis. This was the main reason I decided to work on non-conventional means of fuel combustion through CFB combustor.
Furthermore, I have chosen to apply for Masters in Mechanical Engineering at your prestigious "XYZ University" to gain in-depth knowledge of manufacturing processes combined with management science. I want to be able to manage cutting-edge technologies such as fully automotive manufacturing processes, high- tech machinery,y and equipment. My undergraduate course has provided me with a firm foundation of the basic principles of mechanical engineering and the courses in Mechanics of Machines and Materials, Manufacturing processes, Production Management, Machine Design, and CAD have provided commendable ground work for advanced study. I also enhanced my software skills in SOLIDWORKS, ANSYS, and MATLAB. I therefore decided to take "Production Engineering" as my field of specialization for my graduate study.
In 2018, I was able to get an Internship in the Maintenance Department of KAPCO Pakistan, which is the leading combined cycle power generation company in Pakistan. During this period, I gained hands-on experience of how to operate a combined cycle power plant. With the help of the chief engineer of the department, I worked for increasing the efficiency of boilers and steam turbines by applying my theoretical knowledge. I have learned that we can increase boiler efficiency by generating the smallest possible amount of flue gas at the lowest possible flue gas exit temperature. During my Internship, I feel the need for higher education and after exploring all available and feasible options, I find that a prestigious university like yours is the best choice for me.
I have done various Mini Projects during the semesters which includes:
Footstep Power Generation Project which uses the power of human footstep to generate voltage and serves as a medium to generate electricity using non-conventional methods. It works by using the piezoelectric sensors which utilize the piezoelectric effect to generate electricity. I have done this project on a small-scale and also implemented this at the entry and exit point of my department so that people have to step on this device to get through. This project was highly appreciated by my H.O.D.
Electromagnetic Suspension System in which the aim was to build a system that demonstrates the fundamental concepts of Engineering Electromagnetics. We came across the topic of electromagnetic suspension, which fascinated us as a group. Even though the concept applies to various systems from Maglev trains to Spaceship Launchers, we gravitate to the implementation of the system as a car suspension. We managed to implement an electromagnetic car suspension system with repulsive magnets as a damping element, along with default height adjustment. We decided to implement the given system with a passive control mechanism, i.e., using two repelling Neodymium magnets placed in a short pipe (Syringes) as a suspension pipe. We build a test car with a load on it that can demonstrate the passive suspension effect with the repulsive magnets as damping elements.
My educational background and internship experience coupled with my abilities and great enthusiasm make me a good candidate for this Master's program. I am convinced that this master's program would provide me with the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills I will need for a successful career in the future.
The key reason to study MSc Mechanical Engineering at a Hungarian university is that it helps me to achieve my research and career goals. Moreover, studying at Hungarian University gives me exposure to the International community which would help me to improve my skills and interpersonal talents of teamwork, leadership, and responsibility. I want to work with people having a different points of view, which would boost my knowledge. Being a prospective student for new challenging ideas, I believe that an opportunity for higher education in Hungary would be a unique fortune to test and prove my abilities.
There are High Research universities, advanced technology, moreover, science, and technology in Hungary are some of the country's most developed sectors. Therefore, the need for a platform that would provide me with expertise in the engineering sector is higher than ever. On the other hand, Pakistan has just started its way towards advancement in technology and improving the condition of the engineering sector. It is well-known that Pakistan is facing issues of shortage in Power generation, installation of new power-plants, and skilled labor. So having that in mind, my objective is not limited only to building a successful career, but also to contribute to the development of this sector in Pakistan.
Thank you very much for considering my application. I look forward to your positive response.
Best Regards,
Muneeb Ahmad
