Well I need to get my thesis statement ready soon for my English class...I am doing a research paper on Global Warming and whether it is caused by man or not. I am choosing that it is caused by man. Here's what I have so far:

Mankind is causing intolerable harm to the earths atmosphere by releasing emissions and

Now the thing that I'm not sure about is, if I should add in 3 things that cause global warming? Because releasing emissions is really all there is, or should I say the 3 main things that cause global warming (instead of emissions) like carbon dioxode, methane, and nitrous oxide.

OR

Do I not have to put 3 things in my thesis, since it's all really from emissions, and I'm getting my point across either way? I'll be asking my teacher for help in class tomorrow, but I would like to come to him with a very good thesis already, so I don't need his help.

You are right that "emissions" is one thing, but the sources of emissions are more than three.

You can include emissions from automobiles, air travel, and "other" (locomotives, heavy equipment, etc.
So, maybe those can be the three for your intro paragraph.

Then, you can spend one paragraph on each.

Good luck!!

Global warming is SCAM! The ONLY possible result of this scam will be raised taxes (raising taxes is the major goal of this "global warming" agenda). Another result would be outsourcing jobs to countries who will not sign any agreement in this matter because they are no longer willing to sponsor life on credit of the American system.

Fighting with "global warming" is the same as fighting with "world terrorism" or "weapons of mass distructions" -- there is no actual enemy, but fraud possibilities against the tax payers are endless.

Do not buy what the mainstream media tells you about "global warming" - THEY ARE BEING PAID to brain-wash people about this "issue." "Global warming issue" will be the greatest scam of the XXI century.

Thanks, I appreciate it! I have alot of information at my disposal, it's just figuring out what I want to write about exactly...

I was thinking about this...but then when I write about it, it's all going to be the same stuff, just in different paragraphs. I'm really stuck, been trying to figure this out for a few days now lol. Thanks for the help!

Thank you for your opinion, but everybody has their own! :p

This is my current thesis's (2), I am not sure on how they are :$ -

Modern Industrialization is causing intolerable harm to our ecosystems, directly affecting our sea levels, and changing our weather patterns.

Mankind is causing intolerable harm to the Earths ecosystems due to our agricultural ways, the fossil fuels that we utilize, and the destruction of our limited rainforests.

If you look at the facts, not the popular opinion or stereotypes you will realize the world is more than a popularity contest. You have an opinion shaped by the propaganda machine, movies, ipods, and video games, but when I point you to the messenger you choose to ignore it. Oh well,

If you read this article that presents the global warming media hype you may understand what's going on. Then, you will have to rewrite your whole thesis statement:

Here is a headline from the New York Times reporting on fears of an approaching ice age: "Geologists Think the World May be Frozen Up Again."

That sentence appeared over 100 years ago in the February 24, 1895 edition of the New York Times.

Let me repeat. 1895, not 1995.

A front-page article in the October 7, 1912 New York Times, just a few months after the Titanic struck an iceberg and sank, declared that a prominent professor "Warns Us of an Encroaching Ice Age."

The very same day in 1912, the Los Angeles Times ran an article warning that the "Human race will have to fight for its existence against cold." An August 10, 1923 Washington Post article declared: "Ice Age Coming Here."

Have you already done your research on global warming, or are you trying to pick a thesis that you are going to research? It sort of sounds like you're doing the latter, but it would be better for you to do your research first, and then come up with your thesis. That way, you won't end up covering more material that you can easily deal with. For instance,

"Modern Industrialization is causing intolerable harm to our ecosystems, directly affecting our sea levels, and changing our weather patterns." I imagine you could write an entire paper about the link between global warming and sea levels. Or another one about the connection between global warming and weather patterns. Your second thesis could likewise provide material for another three separate essays. So, I'd say you should pick one of these subtopics, then see if you can come up with three points that would allow to make a solid argument for (or against) it.

Don't know if this will be helpful or not, but this is what our teachers says about thesis statements:
Topic + Main impression = Thesis statement
Topic =My mother's hair
Main impression = is so thick, long, and lustrous.
Thesis statement = My mother's hair is so think, long, and lustrous.

Be careful, though. A thesis must be debatable. So, assuming your mother's hair is clearly thick, long, and lustrous, that wouldn't make a very good thesis statement, because no one would argue with it. Also, impressions can be vague and ill-defined. A thesis statement is generally well-defined and focused.

when I point you to the messenger you choose to ignore it. Oh well

Rich, you pointed him to the News Busters website and then to articles based on technology from 100 years ago. You say that people have incentives to dream up the concept, but you know for sure that there are also plenty of corporations with incentive to say it is a hoax, so who has the credibility? Was the Kyoto Protocol a big conspiracy? The truth is, we are not sure of some things, but... is it your goal to convince everyone that emissions are harmless? What is your goal, and are you sure of yourself?

Ekim, you should choose your argument AFTER you do your research. Just write a paragraph or two about each article you read, and when you are finished, you will have the basis for a good opinion. If you choose your opinion before beginning to research, you'll tend to look only at sources that validate your preexisting view, and you might choose corny sources, like the News Busters website.

If you are still at the thesis writing stage, and if you haven't been assigned this topic specifically, you might even want to pick a different subject altogether. Global warming comes up on this site as a topic really, really frequently. It will be difficult for you to come up with an approach that hasn't been done to death. Try to find a subject that is a bit less common, so that your essay will stand out from the pack a bit more.
