Describe your participation in extracurricular activities. What have you learned from your experience(s)?
(Examples may include: community service, volunteer work, employment, school clubs, sports, family, church, etc.)

Since enrolling on college, I have joined a number of sports, school and church clubs, but the extracurricular activity that has had the most impact on me was volunteering to be a helper for the disabled senior citizens that participate in the Special Olympics. I had the opportunity to work with the intellectual disability agency together with the Special Olympics. I volunteered to help them as a community service requirement for a class. The agency was made up of both elders and youth who are intellectually disabled and participate in the Special Olympics. Within the agency were different clubs which included the walking club, aquatics club, track and field's club, basketball club and even bowling and dancing clubs. I volunteered to work with the citizens in the walking, bowling and track and field clubs. In the walking club we walked laps around the field with a senior citizens, I was assigned to walk with a senior citizen called rose. Rose totally changed my perspectives and mindset about disabled people. Before volunteering, I thought it was going to be a hard task trying to motivate and help the citizens do what they were required to do, but rose who was a forty year old woman was extremely self-motivated and competitive. Before we walked laps, she would make me write down the number of laps she would walk that day and how fast she would complete them. She strived hard to beat her goals every time and also set tougher goals for her herself and would get mad if she did not beat her set time. One thing I learnt from rose was that, no matter how hard a situation or task might seem, it is possible to accomplish the task if you have the right mindset and motivation. Also for the track and field club I worked with a young man called Thomas. Thomas was the exact opposite of rose. He was always unmotivated and would not even walk for 50 meters. I needed patience and encouragement in order to work with him. He was a determined person, but just needed some external motivation and encouragement for him to push himself. Working with him helped my work on my patience and also leadership skills as I always had to encourage and motivate him to do what was required of him. During my volunteer period, I got the opportunity to also work in teams of five with the citizens, especially those that were enrolled in the track and field club. This also improved my team working skills as I always had to plan events and activities for the people in our group with my teammates.
