While researching the after-effects of the Korean War in North and South Korea for a Group project in school, my interest in both countries began to blossom. I was motivated by the work hard, play hard ethic of the people of South Korea. This principle enabled them to develop from a third-world country to a top ten placement in the world GDP. The international rankings show South Korea as one of the world's leading education leaders, attributed to the driving force behind the country's success.
Given its rapid rise from the ashes of the Korean War to become one of the ten major economies worldwide, its education system is credited as key to this success. Entailing an attractive culture in the world is an amalgamation of different cultures worldwide. Having an amazing and safe study environment, South Korea is rated highly in its education.
I grew up in a single-parent family of four children in a developing country. My mother took up multiple artistic jobs during my early years that required her to travel to various countries and regions. Every time she returned, she would recite stories of her journeys, giving me a look around the world outside of my little bubble. Fluent in French, she enrolled me in a French teaching academy to ensure I was presented with local and international ways of thinking. My grandfather always made sure we were aware of everything going on outside our region and country. Working in the Israeli and Russian army in the 1940s, he always told us tales of people from these areas. It would give me an interest in learning more about the outside world. presented
In elementary and high school, I was always at the top of my class and I always tried to outperform my previous score day in and day out. My teachers and peers have always encouraged me to always aim for greatness, just like our academic motto. Additionally, since the age of twelve, I have immensely enjoyed watching historical dramas and documentaries in not only the English language but also Hindi, Chinese and Korean languages with provided subtitles.
After graduating from high school and delving into deeper and broader topics, I was entrapped in history and political studies. I was deeply fascinated by the study of the different cultures and political environments of various countries. This enabled me to deeply understand that Politics and International Relations are not confined to government and bureaucracy but affect each individual within society. Elements of both subjects are applicable and relevant to almost every aspect of daily life. With this interest, I decided to take up different leadership roles in school, bridging the gap between the students and the teachers. Standing for the class captain twice in our school's mock elections which I unfortunately lost, proved a difficult time as my grades were equally dropping due to financial distress back at home. This is when I came to learn the story of the late Kimani Maruge, the oldest man to attend primary school at age 84, all while going through personal struggles as losing all his property during the ghastly post-election violence. His willingness to continue wanting to learn proved fruitful by addressing the United Nations on the importance of education. Determined to compete for a different position, I competed for the French representative position and the head of the dorm room that I won.
I was also in charge of the French music festival sector and my passion for languages led me to it. It allowed me to teach others work in French while enhancing my communication and oral skills. My deeper interest in making a difference after graduation enhanced me to take up volunteer work with One Billion Rising working alongside people of different cultural backgrounds to emphasize the importance of education to female children of low-income families. Helping them cope with day-to-day activities provoked my greater understanding of not only perseverance but the very prominence of cooperation and teamwork in such settings.
While volunteering, I also took the challenge of studying different languages to understand and grasp their cultures. I ended up studying Chinese and French certificate levels. While the country was in lockdown, I took up self-studying the Korean language. Allocating my self-time and self-discipline to read different elementary level works of art, one hobby which I enjoy doing immensely. Outside of school and voluntary work, I pursue a variety of interests. I enjoy music and indulging myself in the arts. I enjoy drawing and writing immensely. I also enjoy traveling because it presents the opportunity to experience different cultures. Holidays and festivals have further fueled my desire to study international politics because they have made me aware of the importance of the relations between countries and cultures. Throughout my education, work and personal experiences, I have developed a broad perspective of the world, which I wish to strengthen further in higher education. A committed, hard-working, and positive approach to new hurdles, are personal traits that I believe will help me succeed in political science and international relations.
