Essay Choice B: "If serving is below you, then leadership is beyond you." A key component of the Global UGRAD Program is service to the campus community. Why is services important to the development of future leaders? What motivates you to give back to the community?

my community service

Service is important to the development of future leaders in that one can not seek to lead a people without first understanding that people. One cannot be an effective leader if one cannot empathize with those whom will be under their charge. It is through servicing the community that one become acquainted with the people, with their struggles, their hopes and dreams, their aspirations. It is through servicing a community of people that one begins to understand and sympathize with them, begins to see them not as a people to be lead but as a people to be guided. In my career as a student I have had to work in groups on a few occasions and I have come to understand that a good leader does not seek to be in charge but is selected by the people because they feel whom they choose as being worthy. Worthy. So simple a word but in the eyes of those whom wish to be lead it is all encompassing of their hopes, their desires, their faith.

Being a leader, a true leader, a leader who is selected by those whom they will lead bears a terrible and beautiful burden. To be chosen as a leader is to understand that you have been deemed worthy of someone's faith, that despite any doubts you may have about your capability to lead you must work against them because there are others who have entrusted you with their belief. One is not merely selected because they are assumed worthy, yes, it happens, but when a true leader is chosen it is because they have toiled through the mire with their people. It is because they have cried, and dreamed, and despaired, and hoped alongside their brothers and sisters and have been deemed capable of bearing the load of their people; this is why service is important to the development of future leaders.

What motivated me to give back to the community is because of all the reasons I've stated above. I am a product of my community, the old woman who lives on the corner and yells at the children is my mother, the man who brings groceries home to his ailing father is my father, the young girls who skip rope on the sidewalk are my sisters, the boys causing trouble are my brothers; my community is my family and my family is important to me. Years from now, when I return to my neighborhood in Cairo a successful engineer turned business mogul I will remember my family. I will remember the old woman who yelled at the kids, the man who brought food to his ailing father, the girls and boys playing in the street, I will remember them fondly as one remembers those whom one has loved. I see my family and I see the leaders of the world today and I see that its leaders lack compassion, lack understanding, lack the grit and worth that comes from struggling alongside your people.

This is why I give back, this is why I feel service is important. The world needs leaders who want more than just a title and a paycheck.

Ahmed , I believe that the first 2 paragraphs are on point in reference to the first 2 questions of the essay. However, the third response, that is where you went off the path. It doesn't really tell me why you want to give back to your community. It is at this portion of the essay that you should be discussing who the current community role models are in your area and how they have influenced your mindset and understanding of what it means to be a leader. The motivation to give back to your community should be based upon the influence of the community to develop your desire to become a future leader. It should be founded on the work of community leaders before you whose work you have come to understand and emulate in your quest to develop as a leader. Develop a more precise response to the motivation question. One that shows how your community has helped you become an amateur leader and whose potential as a future leader is related to your desire to help elevate the status of your community. At the moment, that response is vague and not really in line with the information that could be expected as a response to such a question.
