The essay questions is listed below:

Tell us about your academic/career short-term and long-term goals. How has your Hispanic heritage influenced these goals? * 400 -600 words

In the beginning of my college freshman year I set myself some academic short-term and long-term goals. Let me start of by explaining my short-term goals. One of my short-term goals was to get enough scholarships to cover my tuition for the first year. There are millions of students competing to receive scholarships, and I knew it wouldn't be easy. I knew that being involved with the community, volunteering in different organizations, playing sports, and going to school wouldn't leave me much time to search for scholarships. I sacrificed a tremendous amount of my social life to accomplish my goal. I contacted universities to provide me with links to scholarships but I didn't have much luck. I knew I was running out of time, my college freshman year was about to start, when I received an email of an adviser who had seen that I had applied to various amounts of scholarships at Portland State University. I noticed that I met the requirements for a scholarship, so I decided to give it my best. A couple weeks after submitting the scholarship application I received the wonderful news that I had received the scholarship. I noticed that I kept being persistent towards my goal, I never gave up and that's what helped me accomplish it. Another short-term goal that I've set myself to has been setting myself to be the most successful student that I could be in all of my classes for that first term. Why was this one of my short-term goals? Well, the transaction of a high school student to a university is never an easy process. The environment is different, the workload is not the same, and people can be different as well. Students need to adapt to their surroundings, and that can take a while. Once school started I felt overwhelmed by all the homework, and readings that I received. I felt like I wasn't ready to be in college, but thanks to my college success class I learned a variety of ways on how to be a successful student, so I held on and decided to keep pursuing one of my long term goals, which is to graduate from college with a bachelor's degree in Graphic Design. As mentioned in the sentence before, an academic long-term goal that I have is to be able to graduate college with my bachelor's degree in Graphic Design while still leaving a legacy of being a good student too others. The way I will accomplish this goal will be by being consistent with my school work, getting involved with school programs and events, going out and exploring in the academics, and never giving up. All these things won't just help me academically; they will help me grow and become a better, educated, person.

My Hispanic heritage has helped me influence these goals by knowing and observing the very low amount of Hispanic students that attend college. I've watched the TV program Es El Momento and I've learned that from every 100 Hispanic students that attend college, only 13 end up graduating. That ratio should alarm the Hispanic community; it should get parents to be more motivated to encourage their sons/daughters to attend college. The ratio has influenced me to keep working even harder towards my future goals, and has placed me in the mind set of not disappointing my parents, my friends, my teacher, and everyone else that has helped me gain the privilege of attending a four year university.
