PERSONAL STATEMENT

Hi, I wanna apply to GKS-G this 2024.

Motivations with which you apply for this program
Educational background
Significant experiences you have had
Person or events that have had a significant influence on you
If applicable, describe awards you have received, publications you have made, or skills you have acquired, etc.
Others (e.g., extracurricular activities, community service, or work experiences)

I enjoy challenging myself and standing out from the others. I grew up in a family with strict rules, and my father's side of the family are all civil servants. I developed a passion for science, and when I was preparing for my university entrance exam, my tutor inspired me by sharing the success stories of his engineering students. Ever since then, I have been determined to become an engineer. I was considering which field was suitable for me. I liked drawing house plans from a young age and I also enjoyed physics. Therefore, I finally decided to major in civil engineering.

Being a civil engineer is challenging. Accuracy and critical thinking are necessary skills. Helping to build infrastructure for the community and seeing them use the results of our work can bring extraordinary happiness. I managed to enter the civil engineering department at one of the best engineering colleges in Indonesia to get closer to my dream. In 2018, I completed my vocational studies at Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology in Surabaya. Afterward, I transferred to Narotama University, where I majored in civil engineering and graduated as a bachelor in 2022. During my time at Narotama, I gained knowledge in structural analysis and project management.

In the modern era, construction is constantly increasing due to the growing needs of people. Development is every country's main activity to improve its citizens' welfare. Therefore, it can be argued that environmental damage is an inevitable consequence of development activities. Technological advances are the result of innovative efforts made by the city ecosystem to overcome various problems and improve the quality of life for people and local communities. The use of appropriate building materials plays a major role in producing high-quality, eco-friendly buildings. Environmental degradation will continue to worsen throughout this century. The larger the city or region, the greater the distance required for transportation, resulting in increased energy demand. Green building is a direct result of the sustainable development concept. I am interested in construction management to stay up-to-date with industry trends and advancements. Construction managers enjoy utilizing problem-solving skills, science, business, engineering, and creativity. I am interested in learning about construction materials, methods, and best management practices. Modern construction project management requires meeting demands for time, quality, cost, safety, and worker certification. I am encouraged to pursue a master's degree in South Korea because of my interest in constructing environmentally friendly buildings that can be integrated into smart building systems.

Since elementary school, my parents have always set a goal for me to rank in the top 5. If I couldn't reach that goal, I had to study harder to catch up. In middle school, I was enrolled in a bilingual class and continued my English classes in the afternoon. Additionally, I had private lessons in speaking and grammar at two different places. Due to my interest in science, I studied one step ahead of what was taught at my school. During middle school, I participated in the national sports Olympiad in swimming, as well as the provincial English corner competition. I achieved the highest score in my school on the national exam for middle school graduation and was accepted into the best high school in my city. During my second year, I secured a place in the natural science class, which was a crucial step towards my eventual career as an engineer. During my undergraduate studies, I majored in building construction. I became interested in studying construction management and completed my vocational studies by taking on the final project of calculating the cost of implementing a 4-floor hotel project. My thesis for my bachelor's degree compared the cost and time of formwork on a hotel implementation project in Surabaya. I participated in the university-level tender competition committee in Indonesia, as well as the high school-level competition for building bridges out of ice cream sticks.

During my final year in my vocational study, as an intern at a Commanditaire Vennootschap, I gained valuable experience working both in the office and in the field. Specifically, I worked on a housing renovation project and the construction of a water house for a local water company. My responsibilities included participating in land measurement surveys, checking incoming materials, and overseeing piling and casting in the field. After completing my associate's degree, I was hired by a consulting and contracting company in the field of material handling. Our company builds coal port, stockpiling, loading, and unloading facilities on EPC basis and we have expanded our products and services, into wider scope and various materials and various industries like power plants, industrial salt, cement, fertilizer, bauxite, nickel and other mineral. I worked there as an engineering staff and more specifically I was a document control and conveyor structure analyst. In 2024, I was in my fifth year of working at the company. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I worked from home and provided private tutoring for elementary school students in all subjects. During my enrollment period in the master's degree program, I took language courses on Coursera to improve my linguistic skills. This experience was beneficial for me.

Many students aspire to study abroad to pursue their dream careers, gain a better standard of living, learn a new language, and appreciate other cultures. South Korea is a great choice for me to broaden my horizons and enrich my experiences due to its excellent and modern education system, which will help me prepare for future challenges. South Korea is a highly developed country in Asia with rapid technological and industrial progress. Studying in South Korea can provide valuable opportunities to learn about new cultures and environments, and is highly recommended for those seeking to increase their potential and face global challenges. Additionally, Indonesia and South Korea have established bilateral relations in trade and industry.

The Global Korea Scholarship presents an opportunity to study abroad. This scholarship is appealing as it covers all living and tuition expenses in Korea. Additionally, students receive a year of Korean language training before attending lectures. GKS offers various levels of education, including a master's degree program. I was able to select the most suitable campus in Korea through GKS, where my desired major was available. This scholarship aims to produce future leaders through education, leadership development programs, and community service programs. In addition to English, I am quite good in Korean, I started learning Korean by myself when I was 18 years old. Following high school graduation, I immersed myself in Korean language and culture. I also studied Japanese while in high school. I enjoy learning foreign languages, but I find Korean easier to understand due to the similarity in vowel pronunciation with Indonesian. If I am awarded this scholarship, the investment in education can benefit not only me but also the community. Studying for a Master's in Korea provides students with the opportunity to engage with one of the most dynamic and rapidly evolving higher education sectors in the world. Studying in Korea offers not only high-quality education but also valuable cultural experiences. These experiences can have a positive impact on individuals studying in Korea. This environment also contributes to the establishment of a global atmosphere at the university, I can quickly adapt to various situations.

In conclusion, I am eager to pursue advanced studies in construction science by applying for a master's degree program with GKS. The scholarship offers a comprehensive package of academic benefits, providing various opportunities to study in South Korea. Therefore, being selected as an awardee of the Global Korea Scholarship Graduate Program 2024 and applying for it will enable me to become a skilled engineer capable of developing and innovating sustainable construction practices throughout all stages of construction, from planning to execution and use. This includes the creation of environmentally friendly, energy and resource-efficient, and cost-effective construction products while ensuring proper construction quality in the future.

Your first paragraph is too busy. You compressed information that should be discussed at length using individual paragraphs. The reviewer must get an insight into who you are. based upon the guide questions provided. However, you launched into a totally unrelated conversation in paragraph 3. You can only keep that paragraph if you relate it to the situation in your home country. Do not aim too wide by discussing in general, global terms. It ruins the personal need for your studies. Keep it local. Bring your educational background to the earlier part of the essay. That way you create a fluid and connected educational discussion in relation to your desire to study in Korea.
