Jack Lew, the current Secretary of Treasury, is a perfect candidate to speak at the Athenaeum not only for CMC but also for me personally. Prior to taking over as Secretary of Treasury in February, Lew was Chief of Staff and Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) in the Obama Administration. Lew has been a strong supporter of bipartisan support on budget deals and earns praise from Republicans and Democrats alike. During the 2010 debt ceiling debate, Republican House Majority Leader Eric Holder said, "No one was more prepared and more in tune with the numbers than Jack Lew."
Lew is a great candidate to speak at CMC because of the diversity of his knowledge and experience. The plurality of CMC students are majoring in either economics or political science and Lew can provide a great depth of information on both of these subject matters. Lew's work as Chief of Staff would provide great insight into the day-to-day schedules for top politicians. His work in finance would be great for those interested in going into economics.
Lew is personally a good candidate for me for many reasons. I have always been interested in politics (although I am more interested in mathematics for a future job) and I would find the insight provided by Lew very interesting. Most importantly, Lew is a practicing member of Judaism as am I. Lew has a strict policy of not working on the Sabbath and I would be interested in how he deals with the inconveniences of being a practicing Jew while in such a demanding job position.
