Hello I'm applying for UT Austin and am doing my statement of purpose, my major is journalism. I would really like some feedback because this is my first time applying to a University and have been at community colleges for 3 years now and I'd really like to transfer already. It doesn't say how long it should be but my essay is 2 pages single spaced .
I remember at a young age anxiously waiting for the news to start and for my dad's assignment to come on. I remember seeing my dads name at the bottom of the screen where it said "camera:" and feeling very proud of him mostly because I was little and thought it was cool seeing my dad's name on TV, but also because I knew he was doing something important. Today camera operators, reporters, producers, news anchors, audio engineers, and editors all play an important role in presenting the news to mass audiences. Without people to play these roles in society we would have no source of information and no news and be a society of uninformed people. Which is why I want to play a role in this very important part of our society. I want to be a part of an organization that helps to act as a watchdog to our government and to help keep their people informed at all times.
I didn't always know that I wanted to work in television; actually my main interest has always been photography. Ever since I was little I always had a camera in my hand I was fascinated with taking photographs of people and random objects. In high school is where I developed my passion for film photography, I took two years of photography classes where I learned how to process and print my own photographs. Today I am in the process of turning my walk in closet into a dark room I have saved up enough money and have already bought my photo enlarger, processing tools and equipment and printing equipment. While in high school I started working as a photographer for the Eastman Kodak Company at Knott's Berry Farm theme park in California. It was there that I learned how to approach people and ask to take their photographs as well as competing with other photographers and how to meet quotas. An example of one of the quotas we had to meet was to have approximately 1,000 photographs by the end of the day. While working I saved up to buy my own DSLR camera. Having my own DSLR camera, I was able to learn a lot of things about photography by trial and error and just experimenting with settings on my camera. With my camera in hand I frequently attended music venues in Los Angeles and Hollywood to photograph bands and when I was 19 I got a job with Vesper Public Relations working as a freelance photographer for a music venue. There I learned how to take photographs with limited amount of time and also edit all my photographs with a deadline so that I can email them to be published on their website. I remember feeling very proud of myself when one of my photos got featured in an online entertainment article. I also did photo shoots for up and coming DJ's, bands, and models, and I also take photographs for my own vintage clothing boutique on Etsy that I opened about two years ago. At first I started to practice photography as an art but realized I wanted my photographs to be used as a visual medium to deliver important messages to the public. Today my love for photography continues to grow and I've become interested with photojournalism because I want to be able to share my pictures with the world and be able to inform inspire and motivate others through images. I know that photojournalism isn't just about taking pictures; it involves much more. A journalist has many important duties aside from taking photographs photojournalists must write cutlines that meet the criteria of AP style with their photographs, they pitch story ideas, and work with video and audio editors to produce stories. Aside from these tasks photojournalists must also have passion and really love what they do no matter what, they must have knowledge of the field, and must have a lot of time to dedicate to it.
How I got into television and the reason I have decided I also want to pursue broadcast journalism is because of my dad. I got the opportunity to intern for my dad last year really and it really opened my eyes to world of news reporting. My father has always been a great influence on me he is a hard worker and he is passionate about what he does and he has dedicated so much time and effort into his profession so much that it is the reason my parents are divorced and why we has hardly ever home when I was little and despite all of that I still really look up to him. He never takes no for an answer and it has taken him a lot to get to where he is today and that is what gives me motivation and perseverance to continue with my education goals and career goals. Working with my dad has given me hands on experience to the world of news reporting both behind the camera and in front of the camera. On a typical day I would help my dad with lighting, sound check, and assisting him with whatever he needed. One day I went to work with my dad we were on our way to the assignment when my dad told me I was going to be conducting the interview because the reporter had called out sick. I had to quickly to research on the person we were going to be interviewing and come up with questions for the interview. When we got there I had to coordinate with the publicists for the interview and go over some of the questions. I was interviewing an ex NFL player and he happened to be almost seven feet tall and I'm only five feet so I had to hold the microphone almost above my head for a good 10 minutes which was a very painful yet funny experience. I was really nervous at first but as the interview went on I felt much more comfortable and realized this was something I wanted to do.
Another contributing factor for my interest in broadcast journalism was being able to travel with my dad to London for the 2012 Olympic Games, although I wasn't able to get into any of the games it was an amazing experience. Being in London during such an important event like the Olympics really opened my eyes and made me realize how much I want to be a part of future important worldwide events like these I want to be able to share it with our people back home. I want to be a part of reporting the important moments in history. NBC had about 2,000 employees covering every aspect of the Olympic games so that their viewers back in the US can see everything that was going on in London at such an important time. By traveling I realized I wanted to have a career that involved traveling being able to bring the news going on else where to my country.
I believe that the our country is a great place to want to pursue journalism, we are fortunate to have the freedom of speech that is guaranteed to us in the first amendment of the constitution. The reason why I have chosen to pursue my education goals in Austin and why I want to begin my career in Austin is because it is a state that's population has drastically increased over the last ten years. Texas is becoming more heavily populated and more urbanized which in result will require more news coverage and bigger news teams like the ones in other cities like Los Angeles. I want to graduate from the University of Texas with a bachelor's degree in Journalism and graduate from the University of Texas School of Communication to pursue broadcast journalism. I want to be a part of the news media and be able to communicate and deliver important information to the masses.
