For almost one hundred years, the Latin words, "Vires, Artes, Mores" have been the guiding philosophy behind Florida State University. Vires signifies strength of all kinds - moral, physical, and intellectual; Artes alludes to the beauty of intellectual pursuits as exemplified in skill, craft, or art; and Mores refers to character, custom, or tradition. Describe how one or more of the values embodied in these concepts are reflected in your life.
My Essay:
As i grasp the idea that my high school years are slowly coming to an end. I find myself constantly reminiscing over all my accomplishments as well as my
overall growth as a human being. To speak in present terms i would have to say that both Vires, and Mores are concepts that are respectively reflected in my
life. My high acheivements in the academic areas of english, and reading would best represent Vires. Because i have earned great grades in my english classes and have
scored high on numerous reading and english test. The nature of my character as well as my personal thoughts and responses to customs, and traditions
undoubtly reflect Mores. My reasons are based soley on the two qualities i respect the most about myself, my determination, and giving attitude.
To begin with, i have always been great at reading, and english. Throughout my school years my comprehension level in understanding more difficult literature has always
been high. As far as i can remenber i have always been able to understand and interupt ideas from various literature, and generes. In addition i have exceled in state assessment
test, for example i received a nine on the NRT and a four on the FCAT. When i take test in my class my score is always one of the top scores. I always receive very high
marks in english, the lowest grade i have earned in my past english classes has been the letter grade of a "B." To expand my abilities in reading and english i read as much as i can and
choose to read literature that is above my expected reading level as a high school student. As you can clearly see, reading, and english are my major srengths in school and i take
great pride in them.
Equally important, i have a high perseverance drive, that is in my opinion incessant. I don't beleive in being nonchalant at all. When theres something to be done i am the
type of person that wants to get the job done the second it is asked. As far as grades are concerned, i wouldn't call myself a grade- grubber but i do want the earn the best grades
i can. However if a teacher is offering me a chance to push my grade up such as doing extra credit i am willingly to take time out and complete whatever needs to be done so that i can
have the best grade possible. I remember when i stayed up to three o' clock in the morning working on a dictionary assignment that i was assigned the same day just to receive a
better grade. I beleive my determination represents a student that wants to be successful and knows that their credentials and intentions must be on a high level.
Another sensational quality of my character is my giving attitude. I kind of base my giving attitude on the saying you scratch my back, and i'll scratch yours. However my actions do not always satisfy my needs and its rarely a fair exchange. During the past school year i participated in a internship program at Norland Middle School. I interned with the trust counselor, one of my responsibilities was to
direct the Bully Buster program there. I taught interactive lessons with the students there, and i am proud to say the bullying rate went from about ninety-seven percent to fifteen percent toward the
end of the school year. I may have gotten a academic grade of an "A", but i beleive the students got the better part of the deal. Hopefully ever student i got the chance to talk to learned
what i was giving them. I wouldn't say i just gave out caveats, but personal testimonies that could shape their futures. I may have not been able to change the students and their school drastically,
and give out grand presents but i gave them my time. Which i beleive is the best present anyone can give.
In Summation, i believe my acheivements in reading and english, as well as my determination and giving attitude best represents values of Florida State's concepts Vires, and Mores. I would not say that
i am lacking the skills, and artistic drive that it takes to be successful or even a well- rounded human being.
