Anything you think I should add or take out? Thanks
My grandfather lives in a typical house, in a typical neighborhood where nothing really stands out except, one thing in particular. The biggest red, white and blue flag proudly waving on his front porch, the American flag. My grandfather, like many other Americans would have a heart attack if anybody physically desecrated the American flag. To him, any harm which comes to the American flag, is an injustice done to him. While I understand his passion and commitment to the flag. I do not understand how anybody can be criminally punished for harming a flag, a piece of fabric. After all, the flag is not the freedom itself but its symbol. The freedom continues even if any particular flag is consumed by fire. When I see American flags on fire in the Middle East I do get mad, but my feelings toward freedom or liberty do not change. A piece of fabric was burnt, but my feelings remain unchanged.
Amendment one, defines a citizens liberty as "Congress shall make no law...prohibiting the freedom of speech, or of press, and to petition the government for a redness of grievances. " Burning the American flag is a form of self expression. People are angry towards the government and feel the need to express their sentiments. As long as they are not physically harming others or themselves, burning a piece of fabric is harmless. I understand how much the American flag can mean to a person. I believe the American flag is a symbol. A symbol of liberty, happiness and freedom. The burning of a flag is disrespectful and inappropriate, but if Congress were to pass a law making it punishable, the flag would have less meaning. The American flag ultimately stands for liberty. Liberty does not need any laws, liberty is the power for self- expression without any laws.
By placing laws on the American flag, the flag is becoming a cheap symbol of liberty and justice. The burning to the flag, is just a solution to a problem that does not exist. there are no mass epidemic of desecrated flags. The United States is suppose to -place laws that will hep serve the American people, but a flag desecration law is not doing any good. When people destroy or harm a flag, they do not destroy our freedom or out liberty.
The American Boy Scouts guide demonstrates the correct way to "end a flags duty" It states, when a flag is too old or worn out, the properly way to dispose the flag is to burn it. If a law was to be placed, then hundreds of boy scouts would be in jail.
I know the flag is only just a piece of fabric, physically it its, but the American flag is more than that. I dislike when people burn the flag, but I am indifferent to their opinions. Placing laws to protect the flag seems like a waste of taxpayers money.
