How has your family history, culture or environment influenced who you are?
The culture your family has can have a major effect on who you are today. I was raised by two parents from totally different backgrounds but their traditions, beliefs and ways soon integrated as one. My mother is from France and my father is from New York and both their cultures are incorporated in my everyday life. I am the product of two interesting and powerful cultures.
Since I was little I was in a French school and learned to speak French fluently as well as write and read it. This was all because of my mother and she did not want me to miss out on such a beautiful language and culture. I also got the experience to live in South of France for my 11th grade year. This was an unbelievable occurrence. My mother also got me to have a passion for traveling and learning about different cultures especially the French. I carry the French culture everywhere I go and speaking the language allows me to communicate with other French speakers and share my knowledge of the French culture.
On the other hand, my father is American from a Jewish European decent. English was my first language and I was put in a Jewish school when I was just 2 years old. The funny thing was that my mother, coming from a catholic family and converting into Judaism was the one to put me in Jewish schools and celebrate the holidays. So my mother really took over the Jewish religion part. Coming back to my father, his side of the family was very close and they had many dinners and many conversations that lasted for hours. I only really grew up with my dad's side of the family. I think they made me who I am today, am outgoing and friendly human being.
I would say that my Jewish French American background shaped and guided me to who I am at this very moment. I am lucky to have had a great upbringing as a kid and grateful that my parents have instilled their different cultures in my life. Who I am today is very important in who I will become and how I will come across to other people I meet.
