NYU (Cinema Studies): Four Small Prompts Driving Me Insane

Backround- I am a transfer applicant, applying to the Cinema Studies Program at Tisch.

If you had the opportunity to spend one day in New York City with a famous New Yorker, who would it be and what would you do? (Your New Yorker can be anyone - past or present, fictional or non-fictional - who is generally associated with New York City; they do not necessarily have to have been born and raised in New York City.)

At first I wrote about Martian Scorsese, but he seems too cliche. I think Asimov would be a smarter choice.

If I could spend the day with one famous New Yorker, I would chose Martin Scorsese. The man's passion and technique is legendary, he is undoubtedly the greatest filmmaker of our time. Perhaps we could simply take a stroll through Greenwich Village and end up having lunch in Little Italy. There I could talk to him about my favorite moments in his films, and get his advice on my own screenplays and ideas. I am certain that even a couple brief hours spent learning from him would inspire greatness within me.

Write a haiku, limerick, or short (eight lines or less) poem that best represents you.

After spending hours sitting at my computer trying to type a perfect Limerick I have given up and wrote this poem for better or worse:

The eager chap tried to reckon the friendliness of life.
A quiet job, suburban house, a lovely wife?

He shivered a bit and considered a diabolical possibility.
A world plagued by anger, violence, and hostility?

The fellow paused for one last consideration.
Perhaps it's all just some balanced combination.

In the year 2050, a movie is being made of your life. Please tell us the name of your movie and briefly summarize the story line.

This one is killing me. As some who wants to study what this very question asks, I don't how you can make a tangible film about someone studying well, film. So I wrote this (my other career choice is film editor):

We are sitting down with filmmaker (name), whose autobiographical film is set for release summer 2050. The movie entitled "The Editor" chronicles Mr. (last name's) work for the government disguising some of the most phenomenal conspiracies of the century. In New York, some decades ago, he witnesses our own government approve the unspeakable torture and slaying of a respected foreign dictator during a covert operation. (last name) is kidnapped and imprisoned to avoid disgrace to the country and a nuclear holocaust. During his time in captivity he is ordered to use his seamless film editing skills to doctor sensitive recordings of government cover ups. He is made to preserve a dishonorable political ideals, corrupting his morals in the process. The film also depicts his escape and trial.

Please tell us what led you to select your anticipated academic program and/or NYU school/college, and what interests you most about your intended discipline.

I think this is alright, but I know NYU is looking for a unquie witty student and again this feels like a cliche response:

New York University has a reputation for greatness, and Tisch School of the arts is definitely no exception. Some of the most iconic film makers in the industry have learned from the brilliant faculty of Tisch, and it is my hope to have the same privilege. I have chosen the cinema studies program because I have a sensational passion for the visual power of film. As someone with a profound respect for the art, I am thrilled to analyze movies, and could spend hours writing intelligently about them. Cinema studies should add yet another dimension to my relationship with film.

I have not fully edited these for spelling/grammar, I will do that later once I decide on my final answers. No need to correct mistakes like that :)

hey Cody
I just have a couple comments/critiques:

1) For the very first prompt, I know that Martin Scorsese is a great choice but a lot of people would use it, especially applicants in film. If you really like Asimov, it would definitely be another option for you to write about. In the end, it's who you personally respect more and who you could be most creative with in planning the day's events.

2) I appreciate the rhyming couplets you did for the second prompt; they were very original. In terms of how they represent you though, do you regularly consider the plague, anger and hostility in the world? If you do, it shows you as well-rounded and aware so I believe it was a good point to add.

3) New York University has a reputation for greatness, and the Tisch School of the A rts is definitely no exception. Some of the most iconic film makers in the industry have learned from the brilliant faculty of Tisch, and it is my hope to have the same privilege. I have chosen the cinema studies program because I have a sensational passion (maybe use a different word than passion?) for the visual power of film. As someone with a profound respect for the art, I am thrilled to analyze movieswhy? what made you want to analyze the movies? What made you feel that film was for you? , and could spend hours writing intelligently about them. Cinema studies should add yet another dimension to my relationship with film.

hope I helped!

I'll go question to question:

1) So, it what they want to find out about you in this question if your knowledge, but also what your interested in.
So it doesn't matter is you choose someone that's cliche. As long as your answer is concise, and intelligent.
Your answer for this question is great. I don't think yo have to change anything.

2)
They want to see your creativity, but also hope to get insight on how you see yourself.
Even though it's a good poem, are you sure it completely represents you?
And if so, reemmber to ask yourself, if this is how you want the admissions guys/gals to see you.
The poem is good, orginal and I personally liked it a lot. But just be sure before sending anything off, because everything you write will paint a picture of you.

3) You don't have to be witty r try to be something or someone different. Be yourself, it may be a freshing change to what they normally have to read. say everyone submited witty or humour short answer... then in reality they have lost all unique-ness becuase everyone is being the same. You be yourself.

Beside that.. your gammer seems fine, i didn't catch any spelling mistakes.
Good luck!!!!!

Isaac Asimov was above all, a creator with an unprecedented imagination that forever shaped the science fiction genre. I have selected Asimov, because we both yearn to envision a futuristic society. We shall begin our day at the Hadyen planetarium, an astounding experience and engineering marvel, that would set the tone for a long day exploring the twenty-first century. At nightfall, we find ourselves at a familiar bar or steakhouse, unchanged by time. Here, we could spend hours debating the future, analyzing the great science fiction movies of yesteryear, and perhaps even collaborating on some new ideas.

Sorry for the double post but the edit button disappeared. Also I am a bit over the 600 char. limit here at 661, but still at 8 lines. how strict is NYU about this? after all they say:

"Limit your response to 8 lines, or approximately 600 characters. If you need additional space, please use the.."

Isaac Asimov had an unprecedented imagination that forever shaped the science fiction genre. A man of true avant-gardist creativity, I have selected Asimov because we both yearn to envision a futuristic society. We shall begin our day awed by the remarkable view within the Hayden Planetarium. A marvel of human design, the breathtaking structure would set the tone for a long day exploring the twenty-first century. At nightfall, we would dine at a classic steakhouse, a timeless haven of the common man. Here, we could spend hours debating the future, analyzing the great science fiction movies of yesteryear, and perhaps even collaborating on some new ideas.

I don't think unprecedented imagination works. I think unprecedented is ordinarily understood to mean something about whether something should be approved based on eamples from the past. I think this spot needs a better adjective.

Another part: yearn to envision a futuristic society. ---- this does not work, because what you really mean is that you already envision it... or... that you yearn to actualize your vision for a futuristic society.

And one more: what do you really mean by "futuristic?" This word just means you are saying it involves stuff of the future. I wonder if there is a better adjective for this part...

Thanks. I adjusted you suggestions but I cant find another way to write "futuristic". Im fine with that I guess. What I am really focusing in on now is the poem.

Yes, I think

I have selected Asimov, because we both yearn to envision a futuristic society.

Yes, I think futuristic is actually okay. I don't know why I complained about it the other day, haha. But you at least have to get rid of "yearn to" because you already envision it. You are already visualizing it. You might yearn to actualize it, but you don't yearn to visualize it.

So, how about the poem...

it's great, I would not want to change anything! But, at the end, complete your point.

The fellow paused for one last consideration.
