b) Please tell us more about yourself. Relate one or more experiences or circumstances that have contributed to your personal
or academic development. If you have been out of school for a year or longer, please discuss your activities during that
period of time.
I have been traveling as long as I can remember. Ever since I was six years of age, every summer I would travel from Illinois to Georgia to spend time with my father and his family. Since then I always had a passion for traveling. I dream of traveling to different countries, and meet different people from different cultures and learn from them.
When I was in 7th grade, My Social Studies teacher introduced the class to Japanese. I had always wanted to go to Japan. Japan is very different from America. Unlike America Japan is a very homogenous country. Being an African American, I know that there isn't many of African Americans in Japan, and that I would be in a totally different environment that I'm used to, however I feel that's the beauty of traveling to different countries. During Middle School I took it upon myself to self-teach myself Japanese. It was very difficult for me to learn as I could barely even remember the "first five" hiragana.
Fortunately, In High School I had the opportunity to take Japanese. Freshmen year, learning how to read and write Japanese was very difficult. As I continued studying my Sophomore and Junior Year I began to really enjoyed it. That's when I decided that I wanted to have a career with Japanese or any other foreign language for that matter.
I don't have many opportunities to speak to Japanese people but when I come across native speakers I'm always eager to try to communicate. It is such a great feeling to be able to communicate with people in their own language and have a conversation with them.
I am currently at Georgia Perimeter College in Clarkston Georgia. I pass the highest Japanese the school had to offer. My goal is to study abroad in Japan and continue studying Japanese. I believe Temple University will hand the best experience for the path that I want to follow. I plan on majoring in International Business and to be able to establish global connections.
