Ever since I could remember I've always been interested in art. Just picking up a pencil and sketching anything around me always felt natural. Drawing from my imagination always felt great. Attending the High for Arts and Business, my interest in art grew with the help of the school's two amazing art teachers. They taught me there was so much more to art then just painting a pretty picture. I was always fond of designing and imagining how my own place would like in the future or just designing and constantly rearranging my room gave me pleasure. It was not until earlier this year however, I realized I wanted to become an architect.
Buildings and houses were always fascinating to me. It's a place where people call home or go into for work, and not many think about how it was constructed. To design and construct a building was far more complex than what people intentionally think. Everything in a room or building fits into place. There are many different types of architectural structures used to hold up a building, the physics and space required, yet architects find a way to make it work and beautiful. In AP Art History, my interest in architecture grew as I learned about the extraordinary buildings of the Greeks, Romans, Islamics, etc. New methods of holding up a building were invented and the technology used now did not exist back then but the structures were still managed to be built. Architecture is always changing, either a new method to hold up a building is created or the building itself is made to fit into its time period. I want to be part of that history. Learning about post and lintel, pendentives and squinches, and arches or what type of building it is has made me see every structure differently now. I see now that most houses use pediments to decorate the front of their houses and mosques use the hypostyle hall style or how most methods and ideas of the Greeks and Romans are part of the Western World's architecture. Just walking down the street I can see this in the houses and it excites me.
My interest in architecture has manifested into my daily life. I can point out the few things I've learned about it in certain structures or I look at a building and think of ways I can redesign it for the future. By going to Pratt, I know I will be able to fulfill my dream as an architect.
