This is part of the Rice supplement on the commonapp that asks me to "upload a two-dimensional, scannable image of something that appeals to you."
I asked a few people about ideas, and I just wanted some more opinions.
My first thought was to upload a picture of a slice of cheesecake, because well...I love cheesecake, and it appeals to me. :]
Then, I was also thinking of uploading something calculus-related or just math in general, because I am a super math geek, and I thought it would be a giid way to convey one of my passions.
So, what do you guys think?
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Thank you! :]
hmmm idk how I feel about the cheesecake thing, because it won't really help the Rice people learn more about you. It will just tell them that you like cheesecake, which is not enough of a characteristic to help them decide whether or not you are worthy of attending their institution. while it is creative and witty, idk if that's exactly what they're looking for. if you do choose to use the cheesecake, then make sure the rest of your app is very strong and conveys a lot about who you are. as for the calculus-related thing, i do like that idea. however, take some creative liberties with the image you upload. maybe make it a picture of the golden gate bridge or something, and attach a little explanation (if possible) about how the designers of the bridge surely used calculus in designing it (i'm sure the arches are a quadratic function or something of some sort) and how that bridge signifies what you hope to do/build with your mathematics education. or something like that. idk just a thought. hope it helps!
thanks bluekleenexx,
I see what you mean about the cheesecake thing. And about the Golden Gate Bridge, that's actually a pretty creative idea, but I dont think it is allowed to add any type of explanation. But thanks for the ideas! :]
I think if you can link the cheesecake to yourself in a very subtle and totally relevant way, it would make such an epic essay. i mean, you get unique points, out-of-box thinking points, everything. but it would have to be very carefully planned, and awesomely written.
cheers!
If at all possible, upload an image that YOU have created. Doing a Google image search and finding something generic to represent a generic concept won't really hurt your application, but it won't help it either. Even if you are not particularly artistic, submitting a picture that you have taken or a digital representation of something important to you would go much further in this case.
Here's a thought ... you could take an Internet image and make it your own (kind of like Shepard Fairey did with this AP image of Obama). Here's a link to an easy Photoshop tutorial on making a Julian-Opie style image (it doesn't have to be a picture of a person):
krazzikittie: actually, this isn't an essay. All that it requires is for me to upload an image of something that appeals to me.
Notoman: I like your idea of uploading something original and making a Julian-Opie style image, but sadly I don't have Photoshop. I'll see if I can get access to it somehow, but if not, I'll have to think of something else similarily creative. Thanks a lot for your help!
hey im confused about the same issue. I take lots of photographs, so can i just stick one on which i like and feel represents me in a way?
i was initially going to stick the wwf panda image, but that would have a copyrights issue
So can i just upload any photograph?
You guys are taking this way too seriously; it's just part of the signature.
I love playing soccer, and I wasn't able to really mention it in any of my essays. I was thinking of uploading a picture of a woman scoring/ blocking a goal (since I'm a goalie). Maybe it would be good for my chances, for them to see me as playing soccer for Rice.I don't play for my high school team anymore, but I'm looking into at least intramural soccer in college. What do you think?
You guys are taking this way too seriously; it's just part of the signature.
Maybe, but when the committee is looking at thousands and thousands of applications, something that sets the applicant apart--in a good or a bad way--can make a difference. Rice isn't the easiest school to get into.
And when I say part of the signature, I mean it isn't even required if you're submitting it by paper.
NuclearTide: actually, it is required, whether you're submitting the application online or by paper. And although it may not be "serious", it is a part of the application nonetheless, and the admissions counselors do take it into consideration when reviewing your application.
iqbalhasan0: I think taking a photograph is a good idea, especially if you are into photography. And it's probably a better idea to upload something original.
simplyjuil: I think uploading a picture of a soccer player is a good way of conveying your interests to the admissions team.
thanks everyone for your contributions! :]
