Prompt: Tell us why you would like to major in nursing or occupational therapy and what contributions you see yourself making to the profession.

As the rumbling of our garage grew audible, my little feet were flying through the air while I raced down stairs and sprinted to the door. Every night around 8:30 I would find the most enchanting and giving person coming home from a hard day's work, my mother. In 1986 my mother was employed at Whittier Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital and has continued to work there for the past 26 years as a registered nurse. A million questions poured out at once- about the hospital, how her day was, what her patients were like, if a person was lost or saved that day- as soon as she set foot in our home. My immense admiration for my mother sparked an interest in everything she did, especially nursing.

Everything about nursing has fascinated me from the age of four years old. The hospitals nurses worked in, the medicines they administered, and the amazing people doing the job themselves. A friend of the family used to work as a director at PIH with my mother and knew of my deep interest in nursing. She would allow me to come in and shadow my mother from time to time. Seeing her in action and being along side her for her whole twelve-hour shift was one of the best experiences in my life. It was in that hospital that I truly knew nursing was my calling in life, and I would do anything to achieve my goal in becoming a nurse.

From what I've seen a nurse should be someone who is selfless, giving, and caring. When my grandmother was ill the nurses who took care of her could not communicate well with her and assumed she was confused. They tied her to her bed, took away her call button, and left her all alone while they ignored her calls. All she wanted was to get out of bed and stretch. I vow to treat all future patients with the respect and dignity all humans should receive. I may not make huge strides in medical science but I can give my all to my patients and always be there when they need someone in their darkest hour.

*I know it seems like it is more about my mom in the beginning, but it is because of her that I want to be a nurse. Any help in rewording or editing will be extremely useful!

Thank you!

I think drawing any kind of inspiration is great. Besides I liked the last statement because it is a good qualifying statement. Can you read mine if you have the chance? Thanks!!
