Describe the world you come from - for example, your family, community or school - and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.
My parents have always told me that the environment you are exposed to determines a person's personality and qualities. I find that statement fairly true depending on the type of person you are. The environment people grow up in can influence their future, in a bad or good way. I have seen different people be influenced, by their environment. My father faced many obstacles when he first came to the U.S.: being Mexican, not speaking English, and having no family only his father, and lived in neighborhoods like East Palo Alto during the 90's. His determination allowed him to say I need to try and succeed to live a better life. With my father not giving up and letting a bad environment influence his thoughts about his future allowed him to give my whole family and I a good life
With my father's story and their support I have been able to embrace my parents journey and my heritage. My experiences with my families culture has helped developed me into the person I am today. Living in Livermore I have been able to experience a pretty nice life. Granada High School has helped me develop even more into the person I am. The friendly environment, helpful and encouraging teachers, as well as the sense of family the school has, has allowed me to leave my comfort zone and become active in school events. With my career choice changing constantly in these four years, my father said, "You need to buckle down and see what field interests you the most." I always delayed the research and before I knew it junior year was almost over. I remembered my father's question and I thought I enjoy science and mathematics. That choice came to be Psychology, but changed: Criminal Justice, Veterinarian, Neuroscientist, Nurse, and now Doctor or Biomedical Engineer. I want to be able to influence people's daily lives either directly or indirectly. Knowing that what I do on a daily basis can help or change someone's life and maybe even help save their lives is something unexplainable. A doctor would allow me to see different patients and help them live a healthier life, while biomedical engineering would let me impact a strangers life drastically which will let them live longer and help in the easiness of their daily life. From freshman to senior year I have developed into a more open, less shy, and determined person. My heritage, school, environment, and family have all helped me develop my aspirations and goals. I intend in not giving up and succeeding in my major and throughout my college studies to be able to make my parents proud, maintain myself independently, and help my races stereotype change from what it is today to what it should be, hard-working people that will not give up.
Please let me know of any suggestions! Thanks :)
