Our society's general belief is that learning from academic institutions makes one well-educated. However, I believe the above definition simply makes one well-informed, not well-educated. In reality, being well-educated is about how well one applies their knowledge to act as a prolific contributor to their own life and to the lives of others. Well-educated people are those who ascertain societal needs and are able to adapt themselves and create ways in which to meet these needs. They make strenuous efforts to remove obstacles in the paths of others and strive to bring success in the lives of others. Most importantly, though, well-educated people impart their knowledge to ensure that others obtain the means to take care of themselves.
The question is, does formal education alone produce well-educated people? Absolutely not! Without a doubt, teachers and institutions provide a platform for becoming well-educated. However, well-educated people accomplish much more than what can be taught in schools and universities, which is why I reject the notion that teachers and academic institutions are the only ones responsible for creating well-educated people. Education is lifelong, and every single person, place, and experience gives us the knowledge to contribute to our surroundings and plays a role in making us well-educated.
In essence, being well-educated is about striving to gain knowledge from a variety of sources and using it to leave a positive impact on the global environment.
