Prompt=Topic of Choice/Personal Statement:
I believe that school is so much more then what we understand it to be. Throughout the past few years I have struggled with an eating disorder, severe depression, and major family issues. I would have never been who I am today without the help of school and the support of my teachers. School itself has done a lot for me. Along with being the one place I felt safe, it was where I discovered who I really was. I. learned to see not only the good in myself but, in everyone else. I found my true passions, and learned to put them to use. Instead of dwelling on my own issues, I started to be the person my friends would turn to for help. I found the nourishment that I needed to survive at school. I used my school work to distract me from the reality of my situation and in turn excelled in school. I developed a new found love for writing and began to express myself in new ways. After a while I had changed into a completely different person. I started to see the beauty in life and appreciate it, even if things weren't going well at the moment. My perception had grown tremendously and I had opened my eyes to the bigger picture instead of focusing on such a small part of life. Overall, I had learned to deal with life in a way that I could find meaning and truly be happy.
All my life, I have never looked up to anyone the way I've looked up to my teachers, especially in high school. They have taught me more than math, English, and how to write a paper. They have shown me how to express myself, listened to me in a way that nobody else would, and most importantly they have given me a desire to live. With their unconditional support, time, and motivation, I have become a stronger and better person. One teacher in particular has given me the strength and support to face life head on, no matter the circumstance. It is with her time, ability to understand, and willingness to help that I am writing this today. She has inspired me to utilize my passion for learning and to see the endless opportunities that lie ahead. I can't thank her enough for making me feel like I matter, and for showing me that I do in fact have a place in this world.
It is for these reasons that I want to teach. I want so much to be a part of what made me who I am today. I really want to make an impact on other peoples lives and use my own experiences to do so. I want to inspire others as I have been inspired. I also want to express the importance of education to young people because I feel like so many take it for granted. I have learned that school is a way to escape, and although it's not always fun, it's important. I want to teach others that school is something anyone can succeed at.. I want to show people that it's so much more than homework and tests; it's a place to find yourself. Most of all, I want to help those who are struggling. I want to show them that knowledge is an escape from reality; it's a way to shine even if you are in the dark. I want to finally find happiness and help others to do the same. Ultimately I want to end up doing something that I am passionate about, and I know this is definitely it.
If someone could give me feedback/suggestions/comments, that would be so helpful!
