PROMPT. Who do you believe to be the three major artists and designers who are shaping the discipline you are interested in pursuing or who have influenced you? These should be individuals who have brought relevance to the world or to you in some social, political, emotional, economic, or other meaningful context. Explain why you feel they are important. In what ways do you want your own work to contribute to or make a difference in the world?

Alex Trujillo

Art and design are constantly changing, and there are always trends in the design field. Personally I believe that a designer cannot really make a direct impact on the world, by himself; however, the impact that a designer puts on his audience can then influence that crowd to make a difference. So in an age where everyone is distracted and uninterested in the problems of the world, the only real way to communicate is quickly, and visually which is where bold, and thoughtful graphic design comes in.

Michael Beirut is the epitome of a bold graphic designer that throws in just the right amount of confusion into his work to get his target audience thinking deeply. Beirut is a great inspiration to me because; he limits himself by using two or three colors, and this forces a designer to break out of the box and bring their creativity to the next level. Additionally, Beirut's use of mostly black and white is justified by his use of large type, and his pieces work together to convey his message when the viewer focuses, but at a fast glance it appears as simple well composed graphic design. Beirut also creates logos that look very sleek and clean while still remaining relevant, and I'm certain his logos will remain relevant for many years. I think the goal these days is to create something that lasts while remaining diverse as a designer, Beirut achieves this and his impactful work is certainly hard to forget.

Another great inspiration Is Massimo Vignelli, The ability to be a designer is one thing, but to master several facets of the design world (packaging design, furniture design, airline design) is inspiring. What makes Vignelli's design so impressive is the simplicity of his work, yet it delivers the message with the bare minimum. His design work makes you say, "why didn't I think of that", and this is achieved by his great use of color and thoughtful attention to space. I think Vignelli is an important designer to the world because he shows the simplicity of life; in addition, he is a great example to cut out the unnecessary in design. Vignelli has taught me to use color, but only in doses, and to use it for a reason. Massimo has also given me the confidence to attempt to design more than just 2D products he makes me want to create something feasible that people can actually use as well.

Although graphic design can be done solely with images and small uses of type, the present and future of graphic design is to understand typography. Jan Tschichold is a man who understands typography and left behind many of his teaching for students in the coming years. Although Tschichold has passed, I believe that his teaching continue to have an impact in the way we design and set type. Tschichold revolutionized page proportions in way that would be pleasing to the human eye, in addition, he favored non-centered design. Jan was manifesting these design rules in the 1920's, and now almost a century later his graphs and type are relevant. Tschichold was so ahead of his time, that if you look at some of his work and compare it to some current works you can see similarities, and I call that being very far ahead of your time. The type of impact Tschichold has left on the design world is admirable, moreover, he is an artist I will likely reference for years to come, I would also like to study some of his type design and let it influence my own.

These are all artist that cover different aspects of the design world, and to me the more tools you have in your arsenal the better. I hope to apply many different skills in my years as a designer, in hopes to impact people and create reactions. I find enjoyment in seeing people's reactions to my work even if they look disgusted, because it means I have succeeded in causing an emotional and physical reaction. I think many different rules and style can be applied to the world of graphic design, but at the end of the day I want to create things that mostly come from my mind. My goal is to touch as many different levels of the design world as possible at first then master the one I love most. I hope to bring graphic design to a different level of understanding amongst common civilians, because many do not understand what graphic design is and the power it has on the world.
