UT Promise = growth
What the UT promise means to me can be summed up into one word--growth. And I have grown so much by volunteering for Annandale Christian community for Action, which is an organization that gives furniture to families in need. ACCA has taught me a lot, but the most important thing that they showed me was people. I saw people that were so poor that they had ten or more people living in one apartment. People working multiple jobs, so they could go to school or feed their families. The truth is, these people had the strongest connection to their family and friends because they needed to rely on each other to survive. They formed a community that was something special money or power could not buy. While I saw these generally hardworking families, I also saw the ones, who were deceitful. The type of people, who would abuse a system that is trying to help them to gain a profit by selling the furniture that we gave to them for free. Even though, I have seen the good and bad, while volunteering; they all were trying to achieve the same thing: a better life.
Volunteering is a constant reminder for me to working on myself to become the type of person that I see in others. The capacity of compassion to complete strangers, the drive to change my situation, the strong meaningful connections, and more, while rejecting mistrust that I have seen in others. Serving my community is important to me because it is how I became me.
