hello i was just wondering if by any chance i can have someone look over what i have of my essay so far. it is an argumentative research essay and my topic is global warming. I am against global warming. My teacher says that i need to focus on a more specific topic within global warming but i just dont know how or what exactly to focus on. i feel as if i need to rewrite what i already have but just dont know where to start. please can you read my essay so far and try to help me out. thanks erin.
Global Warming
Global warming is a serious issue for humans to think about as well as science to figure out. When people usually hear the words "global warming' they come to the conclusion of climate change, but it affects us in more ways than we think. Global warming reduces agriculture and natural resource for people; causes extinction of animals: it also creates the possibility that life on Earth will eventually end. This is terrifying to think about, so why doesn't anyone do something about this major worldwide issue? What are companies doing in order to decrease their carbon waste in this world? These types of questions and this particular issue affect not only me but the whole world as well. We as humans who are bound to this Earth should be trying to save our planet as well as make it better for generations to come. Reducing our carbon footprint will make this planet a happier, greener place. Global warming is a natural phenomenon that has impacted the earth both positively and negativity, yet with the continued use of fossil fuels and other pollutants, the earth's atmosphere will lose the capability to sustain life
The definition of global warming is the increasing of earth's atmospheric temperature and it is believed to be caused by greenhouse gases ("Global Warming"). Greenhouse gases are gases that trap heat in earth's atmosphere. There are many different types of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and water vapor, all of which are in earth's surface and are helping maintain and increase the temperature of earth ("Greenhouse Gases"). "Co2 usually gets top billing in this because it accounts for 80 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions (Gore 28)." The sun is involved in heating earth's surface temperature as well. Most of earth's energy comes from the sun. The sun's energy passes through earth's atmosphere, in the form of light waves, warming up the surface temperature of planet earth. Some of this heat is trapped in the atmosphere, which warms up earth, while the other sum radiates back into space as infrared radiation. On the other hand, greenhouse gases catch this radiation so it slowly warms the temperature of earth's atmosphere (Kurtus). Having some of this heat is vital to earth because without it the average earth's surface temperature would be 0° F. Although these natural greenhouse gases are good for earth, but due to increase of concentration of human caused greenhouse gases we are creating a dangerous environment for humans and animals to live in (Gore 28). This heating of earth's atmosphere is one of the main causes of global warming.
There are many different reasons as to why global warming is happening. On the other hand, many people are still in doubt that it actually exists, or that it will even affect them during their time in life. With most people if they do not see it, they do not believe it; if it is too contemplating they will deny it; or they will ignore global warming or chose not to believe because global warming will cost too much money to make a change. However, they are wrong! We see it in the ice caps, there is scientific data to prove the earth's climate is changing rapidly, and if it cost money to save our only place we know as home, the only place where we can survive, then why not do stop global warming. Through time, humanity has strived to increase the quality of life through means of technology. Yet these advancements have damaged the earth's atmosphere unintentionally. So how are we destroying this place called home, by everyday living. Humans are burning fossil fuels everyday in order to do regular things in their life. "When we burn fossil fuels (oil, natural gas, and coal) in our homes, cars, factories, and power plants, or when we cut or burn down forests, or when we produce cement, we release CO2 into the atmosphere (Gore 28)". Nitrous oxide and methane are also like CO2, and we use these gases too. Humans mainly produce methane and sixty percent of it is in earth's atmosphere. Methane comes from live stock farming, landfills, fossil fuel burning, wastewater treatment, and other industries (Gore 28). These different activities are the main cause as to why earth is warming up.
The burning of fossil fuels for electricity and gasoline for transportation is very harmful to the environment. Power plants generate electricity by burning coal that lets out massive amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere. We are very dependent on electricity, we will keep burning coal, and letting more CO2 in are air. Traveling by car, in the U.S., accounts for 33 percent of emission (EPA). With our population severely increasing the need for more transportation as well as consumers goods will increase as well. This means increasing the use of fossil fuels and burning more fossil fuels for transportation and the manufacturing of the car. Deforestation for wood, farmland, and living is a big cause for global warming. It is common knowledge that humans breathe out carbon dioxide and inhale oxygen, while trees let out oxygen and take in carbon dioxide. Since humans are cutting or burning trees down for living purposes we reduce the amount of carbon that is absorbed through trees ("Human Activity Is Causing Warming"). These are the many causes of the worldwide phenomenon but how exactly is it affecting the planet?
