Me and my friends had been out all night clubbing in Manchester and were having a blast.
We staggered in and out of various bright, inviting clubs and bars. As the night began to end me and my friends went our separate ways and I walked back to my apartment in the suburbs. As I walked down the street the lights fluttered on and off and I could see shadows everywhere. I picked up the pace but I still felt I was being followed. I was hot now, and was at a running speed, I thought I could get home quicker by running down a dark alleyway. This was a mistake.
As I turned the corner, I was frozen to the spot. A dark figure stood at the end of the street. I slowly edged back towards the road but the figure broke into a ferocious sprint. I ran back around the corner and bolted down the road. I'd never run so fast before and I didn't stop, I carried on down the road and into an abandoned flat complex. I stopped in the centre and span around anxiously hoping that my assailant had fallen behind. But he hadn't.
He walked in to the complex and stared directly into my eyes. I trembled with fear. I turned to my right and then my left looking for an escape. The figure edged closer and as I thought all hope was gone I noticed a ladder leading to the roof of the flats. I ran over and pulled myself up the ladder as fast as I could, my follower still hot on my heels. I was sweating and panting like a dog. I leap up the ladder as fast as my body would allow and the figure was still following me, though he was gaining on me by every second. I reached a fire escape at the top of the flats and sprinted across the building top and round the flat compounds roof. It was so dark, I couldn't see a thing. All I could hear was my heart beating. It felt like a drum in my chest, filling my ears my noise. Before I could catch my breath I saw the shadow again. I was frozen again, hoping and praying he wouldn't see me. I knew though, that if I didn't move he would see me, so I ran.
I shot over the rooftops jumping over various objects strewn along the floor and the thought dawned on me that the roof would soon end. Thoughts began rushing through my head. Did I jump down and try and land in a bush or do I try and run around to the ladder again. I didn't know, but I didn't get chance to decide before my assailant closed the gap and was reaching out to grab me, I couldn't let him so I approached the edge and readied to jump. I'd rather die that let the shadow catch me, but before I could jump the figure tripped behind me and fell into my back, he then span towards the edge and grabbed my ankle. I was slipping down and only just managed to hold onto a pipeline. But the figure was still holding on to me ankle, but he was slipping. I felt him clawing at me to try and regain a strong hold, but I continued to wriggle and I felt my shoe come off. He wasn't holding on. He had fallen.
I scampered my way up and stood looking down at the body on the floor. All I knew was that I was safe.
