The table presents data related to subway systems located in six large cities (London, Paris, Tokyo, Washington DC, Kyoto and Los Angeles).
Overall, one can notice that the oldest metro systems are, in most cases, the most developed ones in terms of length and therefore the highest popularity is observed there. Conversely, the youngest systems are much shorter and obviously fewer commuters use them.
The underground railway station with the richest history is definitely in London with approximately 150 years of being active. These sited in Paris and Tokyo were also opened quite a long time ago (in 1900 and 1927 respectively). The length of subway routes in these cities is considerably high ranging from 155 kilometres in Tokyo to 394 kilometres in London. In terms of the amount of commuters, Tokyo leads with an outstanding number of 1927 million passengers per year but the numbers witnessed in Paris and London are also relatively high (more than 750 million individuals per year).
In contrast, metro systems in Washington DC, Kyoto and Lost Angeles were first introduced in the last 40 years. While the capital city of the USA built relatively long routes of 126 kilometres and the number of users is higher than 100 million per year, both the Japanese city and the capital city of California observe rather small development and popularity.
