Task: Many museums and historical sites are mainly visited by tourists rather than local people.
Why is this?
What can be done to encourage local people to visit museums and historical sites?
It is undoubtable fact that there is a tendency of disinterest to museums and historical sites by local people existing. Instead of having a pleasure and delight of pieces of art and places which has a great history, they tend to find other ways to get entertained. On the contrary, tourists and guests of the country finds it as a wonderful opportunity to get acknowledged to the local history, customs, and aspirations. In recent years there has been done a lot of steps and ways found to attract locals to national sights. But this matter is still topical for numerous countries and requires another approach.
One possible approach is to run promotions aimed to eager citizens to visit and get involved in the activities of national sights. These promotions can be done in contribution with employees and guides of museums, which can present places in a very brief and informative way. Although this practice can be released without any problems, there are a lot of issues which can arise. For instance, this practice is already used by several museums but still remain to bring a minimal effect.
An alternative approach would be to give an extra discount to local people; it means that they will not need to pay much money for visiting places. This action would foster to an increase of income and attendance to these places. However this practice is not fair towards international guests and tourists, because they will have to pay pretty much higher price.
A more effective approach is for museums and other cultural institutions to innovate and update the existing programs. These changes can be reached through detailed surveys, which can influence to decisions of marketing and management teams. In my point of view it is vital for them to know visitor's needs and desires. Once they understand it, they can get a great outcome.
