Which of these do you think helps you understand a civilization better ? The attitude and contributions of its society towards art or the citizen's interest in science and research.

Do you think technology has alleviated wars or aggravated it ?

Is a liberal agenda more beneficial to a country's progress or a conservative one better ?

Music lyrics today have become excessively explicit. Do you think Government Agencies should make it their responsibility to censor such obscene verses? ( You can talk about freedom of speech as well as how kids should be protected)

Do you think women should lower their career goals to take better care of their children ? (It has been scientifically shown that children with housewife mothers turn out to be more successful in life. So argue both sides )

Hope those help.

Well, the ideas suggested by nhl 2010 should be rephrases to fit with a compare and contrast essay. For example, you could say:
Explain the similarities and differences between conservative and liberal social philosophy in America.

To compare and contrast, it is good to write a whole paragraph about one thing, a whole paragraph about another thing, and then a whole paragraph about both.

Try that, and post it so we can help!

You could take nhl2010 last topic about women and compare and contrast women's role in the home today and during the 17th and 18th century. You could even focus on the women in Europe!

Hope this helps :P

Hi Isabella, it is a bit difficult to discuss your topic in a compare and contrast manner because there are no similarities between the two topics. You will have to come up with a pretty solid connection between the topics in order to make it work. The idea is to center the essay on lessening the need for a physical library because e-learning is the trend of the future. I'll try to help you by giving you a few ideas that might work for a compare / contrast essay.

1. Introduce the topic as something very relevant to the issue of the dwindling need or interest of children to have an onsite school library. Explain how your point of view is that the school will be able to save money while increasing the learning value of students if they would purchase more computers instead of buying new books for the library.

2. For the comparison part, you can discuss how almost all relevant academic books are now in in e-book format which are much cheaper to purchase and accessible to more students when compared to library books.

3.Contrast how expanding the library books would cost the more than would be spent for the purchase of new computers. Discuss the cost of a book print at X amount, with at least 2 of the same book purchased for the library as opposed to the single purchase of one e-book for multiple person access in the library.

4. Compare the reaction of students to learning from books in a physical library as opposed to accessing books from the school online library from their laptops anywhere they are.

After these 3 comparisons, you can then conclude your essay to wrap up your point of view. Good luck with your essay. I hope i was able to help somehow.

Isablella, for your initial thesis, here are my thoughts. Hope you will find it useful.
I will say that the school should purchase computers instead of books. For one, today's children grow up with computers, and I will suppose computers have an more important role in their lives than that in ours. Therefore, computers should be part of their learning in the school as well. It's more seamless than books. Second, with comptuters, you can do much more than reading books. The students can make projects, do research, and explore many other things. In contrast, books are more static and limited. Third, students can actually read ebooks on the comptuers, which is much cheaper. I admit there might be not many students doing so initially, nontheless, it worths a try.

Books do have advantages. What is in the books are often more reliable than that on the internet. And when reading books, you feel more calm and more able to do deep thinking. However, that could be just for people who have been used to books. For students, today, they may find more natural using computers to gain knowledge.

@elumani, your situation is quiet difficult due to the broad spectrum that topics can comprise. I agree with other EF contributors that there's a wide variety of complex and non complex topics that you can write about, however, you have to mind the following;

- the scope of the work that the topic would entail
- the research
- gathering of your facts and figures
- establishing the content of your essay
- knowing the pros and cons then later weigh the importance of the subject
- citing examples, notable contributions and logical explanation
that will back up your comparison
- to conclude your essay with justified analysis of the chosen topic

Most of all, think hard of the topic, something that you will not get pressured on, something that you will enjoy researching and writing into a masterpiece.

I look forward to reading it here in EF so we can help you further.

Assuming both governments are not corrupt and have capable leaders, which economic system is better; capitalism or communism?

Just an idea that I find intriguing and would be interesting if someone did in-depth research on.

Well, @basil, I believe capitalism is still better than communism, this is because I'm looking at Korea's government system now and practicing communism did not really do good to it's citizen, maybe with the business and economic side but overall, it's not that successful.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to do an in-depth research on this particular subject.
There are a lot of comparison that can be made in this subject and it is indeed a very broad topic to research on and if you do,

consider writing in a very objective manner and make sure you remain true to the facts and gather all the information you need before starting the article.

It's one of those topics that are quite sensitive and of course you don't really want to make any wrong facts delivered in your writing, at least for me this are the things that needs utmost consideration.

Related with technology:
The threat of nuclear weapons maintains world peace. Nuclear power provides cheap and clean energy. The benefits of nuclear technology far overweight the disadvantages. Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer.

In what ways has information technology changed work and working practices in the past 10 years?

Related with society:
Human beings do not need to eat meat in order to maintain good health because they can get all their food needs from meatless products and meatless substances. A vegetarian diet is as healthy as a diet containing meat. Argue for or against the opinion above.

Related with education:
Do the benefits of study abroad justify the difficulties? What advice would you offer to a prospective student?

Hope this will help you.

To look for ideas for comparison/contrast. you need only to look at the news and entertainment sector of our society!

To begin you can clearly see a leading topic this year is the Presidential election. You could compare the two leading parties, or pick two candidates. Thirdly, you could compare the men to the women.

Another contest hotly debated is global warming. You could compare those who believe it to those who don't. Should we take some action or not? Is any necessary?

Another place to look is entertainment. Follow the awards nominations for an important competition, and compare the two top contenders. One hot topic is always best film for the Oscar's.

Still yet another competition is sports. Who will be in the Super Bowl? What is your favorite team? Do they have a chance of making it to play-offs?

Hope this gave you some ideas!
