hey, I had to write an essay and my statement is: requiring students to pass a standardized test to receive a high school diploma will not improve the educational standards or academic achievement in our schools. everybody who reads this, please give comments and correct if there are any mistakes. thx :D
Requiring students to pass a standardized test to receive a high school diploma will not improve the educational standards or academic achievement in our schools. Every year students have to take tests to prove that they remember what they have learned that year and each year hundreds of students have panic attacks, blackouts, stress and they fail. I think it is a shame that because of the society that we live in these people will have to re-do their exams or even re-do the whole year. And that brings us to our statement: are exams really necessary? We already have to take a huge amount of tests during the whole year and failing one or two exams doesn't mean that you are dumb it could be just bad luck.
First of all I think that we don't need exams because we already have to take a huge amount of test during the rest of the year. Can't teachers just base their final point on this? Students at our school have to take about 30 tests each semester that makes almost 100 tests per year, than you still have all the writing exercises that are graded on and also extra tasks and speeches on points. And on top of that you have to take exams! All these things cause students to have panic attacks or burn downs.
Second, if a students fails their exams. Does it mean that he/she is dumb? Not at all, it is possible that the student suffered from the consequences of stress or anxiety during their preparation of the exam or whilst making the exam. Maybe the student just isn't good for that particular course. But it is definitely a shame that those students probably will have to re-do their exams or even the whole year.
Third, teachers say that exams are necessary because they have to know if their students still remember what they have learned during the year because they will need that information to go on to the next year. But even if a student gets a 100 percent on their exam, doesn't mean that it will remember it the next year.
The general goal of exams is testing the abilities of the students and how much they have learned. Teachers say that they can't do this by a test because a test goes about one topic in specific whilst an exam tests a greater range of skills. But even if that is true the pressure that is put on students to make sure that they pass their exams makes it even more difficult to pass them. Exams shouldn't be that important, there are other ways to improve academic achievement in schools.
