I am having trouble with my writing,
I used to work in the media so write like a journalist, now I am doing a course which means that I have to write academically, how do I do this? i keep getting feedback from the tutors that I write like a journalist and need to greatly improve but have no clue where to start.
any help would be appreciated
Hmmmmmm.... well, ask them what they mean! Sometimes people give feedback based on insufficient understanding. To write like a journalist is great. Journalists write the way they do because it works. Grab the attention, make an assertion or announcement, and then use several paragraphs to describe each aspect of it.
A journalist is supposed to be neutral and objective, and so is an academic writer.
If you are getting negative feedback, perhaps people think the writing is too informal. The only way to improve is to read lots of articles that are examples of the type of writing this school approves of.
Please try to tell me how your professor's articles are different from your writing. That's where you'll find your answer.
In academic writing, it is important to make a clear thesis statement, back it up with evidence in the body paragraphs, and then discuss the IMPLICATIONS in the conclusion.
:-) Please post some of your writing! I'm intrigued by the question.
How does one write an academic essay? First, understand what is required for an academic essay. Second, evaluate whether you can meet those requirements. If you can, then write the academic essay. If you cannot, then work on developing the requisite skills and write the academic essay after you are able to.
This is an awful way to answer. Obviously the effort to determine what is required is underway, and it is taking place here in this thread. "Evaluating whether you can" goes without saying, and so does "writing it if you are able to." You have a lot of good advice to give about how to write a good academic essay, so give a little!
