Prompt: It should include information about why you chose to be a Nurse Practitioner and why you chose the University of X and how you will obtain a preceptor (Volunteer Clinical Faculty) with whom to work.

The Adult-Gero Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program at University of X interests me for a number of reasons. I first entered the field of nursing nearly five years ago and I immediately found my niche in Critical Care. During this time I have discovered my passion lies in making a positive impact in the lives of others through healthcare. As a bedside staff RN I have numerous responsibilities. These include but are not limited to; the ability to advocate, educate, and practice clinical skills for my patients as well as their families.

The infrastructure of an advanced practice nurse begins with a Registered Nurse, a title that I take immense pride in and value with high honor. I have now reached a point in my career where I am ready to accept an even greater responsibility and at this stage in my personal life, I'm prepared for the challenge. The decision to attend the UX Adult-Gero Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program was not a flippant one. I have chosen this particular program with a lot of consideration. X is my home town, two years ago the USAF relocated my husband and I to the state of Texas. Prior to relocating I was able to work as a Staff RN at University of X Medical Center in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. A large portion of my coworkers were graduates of UX BSN program and spoke very fondly of their experience. The history and culture of the College of Nursing is extremely impressive, the amount of cutting edge research is astounding and the wealth of knowledge coupled with the level of experience of the faculty is humbling. I would be honored and delighted to become an UX alumnus and add to the already outstanding legacy.

Upon completing the program and obtaining my degree I intend on working primarily within the outpatient setting; creating care plans, diagnosing, and treating based on patient care needs. Currently during my free time I volunteer at a local homeless shelter and in the future, I plan to expand my volunteering efforts abroad. I am a first generation Sierra Leonean-American and have a large amount of extended family who still resides in West Africa. I have firsthand knowledge of the continent's poor health care conditions and therefore I have a great deal of empathy for those in developing countries. Correspondingly, this empathy drives my passion to make a difference. My primary goal upon graduation involves using my expertise garnered from UX's Nurse Practitioner program to provide holistic care to less-advantaged communities, and also educating health care providers within the humanitarian setting.

Due to the current setting I work in I have been able to create and become a part of a very large network of healthcare professionals. The interdisciplinary team is comprised of Acute Care Nurse Practitioners and dozens of Physicians with a variety of specialties. A number of those physicians practice within the hospital setting as well as within their private practices. The challenge won't lie in finding a preceptor but in choosing one amongst the many qualified professionals.

For me, obtaining a Nurse Practitioner degree is not an exercise in increasing my tax bracket and enhancing professional esteem; rather, it is an opportunity to expand my reach to affect the lives of those in need. Nursing is a medium to positively impact humanity and that in itself holds merit. Nevertheless, by advancing my education I will gain the efficacy & competency to multiply the impact. I am dedicated to pursuing my passion and am eager to become a greater leader in the field of nursing.

Msha, you have managed to write an almost perfectly combined statement of purpose and personal statement. However, I would like you to develop certain parts that do not totally answer the prompt.

- That said, how exactly do you plan on choosing your future preceptor? That is what the essay is asking you to relate. So if you have a criteria in mind, I suggest you discuss it in this section in order to respond to the prompt.

For me, obtaining a Nurse Practitioner degree is not an exercise in increasing my tax bracket and enhancing professional esteem;

- There is a slight snobbishness and haughtiness to this particular sentence, I am recommending that you try to find another way of saying this. Play up your desire to respond to a job that you know is a vocation rather than an ambition instead. It should come across as softer and with more concern and care for the patients :-)
