In my final year as a mechanical engineering undergraduate, I took an introductory course in production engineering which involved the application of fluid flow dynamics and piping design, this ignited and stirred my desire for graduate school with emphasis on the oil & gas sector where conventional problems often required unconventional solutions. My interest in graduate school was aggrandised by my project supervisor who introduced me to research work coupled with the fact that my thesis involved design, construction and testing which was particularly challenging though interesting. The experience provided me with some of the tools required for my graduate study in form of extensive research. It was one of the most interesting modules I took during my undergraduate study and it fuelled a passion in me for this area of engineering (production).
Nigeria is one of the major producers of oil and gas in the world and with most of its proven reserves now offshore striving for theoretical and technical knowledge seemed plausible and hence my application for a masters degree in subsea engineering in the United Kingdom where proven leaders in the field have been established. This I believed will act as a catalyst to achieving my goals of making meaningful contributions in the sector. I was privileged to have studied key modules relevant to the industry such as subsurface technology, offshore engineering practice, marine pipelines etc. This modules incorporated with seminars from industry based experts from multinational oil producing and service companies such as BP, Atkins, Aker solutions, NES exposed me to some of the technical aspects of the petroleum industry, some of the challenges involved, the rewards of solving complex industry problems with computer simulations such as ansys but left me seeking more specific in-depth analysis required for some sectors of the industry particularly well design and drilling. This desire lead to my application for a petroleum engineering degree in the United States having proved itself to be a leader in the petroleum engineering world and am confident i can pursue my research interests in xxx school.
My goals for the near future are to acquire the much required technical expertise, confidence and competence to pursue a career in the petroleum industry where there is a dearth of skilled human capital, an abundance of natural resources and dire need of those personnel who possess the passion and dedication needed to effect change in the industry in Nigeria and the world as at large. It is for this reason, I have chosen to apply to XXX school based on the pool of well known industry recognised lecturers, well equipped laboratories and relevant research interests based on industry collaboration. I am also aware of the size and diversity of the students in your graduate school, which combined, provides the right atmosphere to enable proper learning for all involved. Your university has become a good catch in these areas enumerated above and hence I would be honoured if given the opportunity to join the elite few given the rare opportunity to study in your great citadel of learning.
