I haven't been in school for five years and I feel my writing is a little rusty...please review and let me know if it just sounds terrible!
Thank you!
This is my personal statement for ASU M.Ed program in Early Childhood Education.
From ASU: Please describe the personal and professional goals that motivate you to apply for the M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education. Explain what has led you to this career path, and how this program will help you excel as an Early Childhood teacher in the classroom. The admissions committee pays particular attention to the quality of writing and ideas expressed in the personal statement.
If someone asked me five years ago what I was going to do when I graduated, I would have simply stated, "work at a resort." I was a few months shy of earning a BS in Business Administration with a concentration in Resort Tourism Management. I had spent the last four years completing internships at several resorts as well as sacrificing countless grueling hours in the University library. I had earned the degree and I was going to use it, or so I thought. I quickly accepted an entry level position out of college with the same ambitious attitude of advancing my career in the hospitality industry; I truly believed this was my path in life. I spent the next five years bouncing around between various positions trying to find my fit; I even started my own business, but nothing was providing any true fulfillment. It wasn't until this year, when I started volunteering in my son's kindergarten class did I discover my true passion, working with children.
When I think back to my childhood, I always "played" teacher or librarian and when I reached my teen years one of my first jobs was a babysitter. After my son was born, I enjoyed coming up with creative ways to help him reach new milestones and I continue to enjoy the challenge of keeping him stimulated through carefully thought out activities and crafts. With that said, I am not sure why I did not catch on sooner. When I work with the kindergartners, I feel a level of satisfaction and fulfillment knowing that I can have a positive impact on their learning experience. I understand that the early stages of a child's education is crucial to their long term success and sets the precedent for their academic future. I know that teaching requires a lot of commitment and determination and my undergraduate education is representative of my ability to reach success through hard work. I was on the President's List and Dean's List for the last two years of school and earned a 4.0 my last semester. The last year of school I maintained a 3.8 GPA while working full time, starting a business, caring for an infant and training for my first half marathon. I used the same focused mentality when I left college for the real world.
Shortly after graduation, I accepted a sales position at a small corporate travel agency, Lodging Source, LLC. While my official title was Sales Coordinator, I eagerly learned all areas of the business providing my knowledge and support as needed. Additionally, I was instrumental in the start-up of an online booking agent, creating a convenience customers had not experienced through Lodging Source before. By utilizing my knowledge of web based applications, creativity and attention to detail I was able to add a valuable service to the company and in turn expanding its clientele. At PolyClean USA, LLC. my role as Operations Assistant made me responsible for the daily operations of six mobile workstations. I worked closely with the owner to put new systems in place to ensure all trucks experience minimal downtime. Clear communication cross functionally, in addition to multitasking and staying highly organized contributed to the effectiveness of my position. In my current position at Taco Boy, I work in an extremely fast paced environment, however I am able to take time to provide each guest with individualized attention. I utilize time management and attention to detail to create memorable experiences and build valuable relationships. My professional resume may not reflect any direct experience in education, however I am certain all of the skills refined in previous positions are transferable to the learning environment. Organization, time management, creativity, and commitment to success have proved valuable skills in the past and coupled with a graduate level education from Arizona State University, I will be able to succeed in the classroom by providing a positive and effective learning environment.
Earning my M.Ed in Early Childhood Education from Arizona State University will provide me with the necessary knowledge of the latest practices and procedures affecting the learning community. I believe knowledge is power and I look forward to learning all issues surrounding early childhood education as well as best practices and of course using creativity to explore new teaching techniques. My hope is to use my degree to teach kindergarten or first grade in the public school system. I want to use an interactive hands on approach in the classroom, I look to maximize participation and create a collaborative learning environment that highlights instructional effectiveness. I anticipate Arizona State University providing me the education and skill set to become a successful early childhood educator.
Thank you!
