Instructions: Please write a brief narrative describing yourself, your career goals, and the importance of graduate study at this point in your life. It should deal with influences on your intellectual development, the educational and cultural opportunities (or lack of them) to which you have been exposed, and the ways in which these experiences have affected you. (500 words or less)

"Someone help! My daughter won't wake up!" yelled a panicked mom. Moments later, the room filled with two attending physicians, three nurses and a patient care technician. After ushering the mom out of the room, work to stabilize the patient ensued. This was not any patient, it was me. My condition had rapidly deteriorated and my mom was the only one who noticed. This was the result of a culmination of preventable medical errors. For me, the errors were life impacting but not life threatening. However, according to the 1999 Institute of Medicine study, as many as 98,000 Americans may die each year from hospital mistakes and another million suffer some kind of injury. A recent study published in the health policy journal, Health Affairs, found that about 90 percent of all hospital mistakes go unreported.

I am a highly dedicated, disciplined and responsible nurse. I have gained an appreciation for the complexity of our healthcare system that includes dozens of individuals: nurses; physicians; respiratory, physical and occupational therapists; physician's assistants; nurse practitioners; social workers; patients and their families; and more. This complexity can result in adverse patient care. In addition, through participation on my hospital's practice council, our unit has experienced small incremental improvements. But there is so much more that could be done to improve patient outcomes through higher standards of practice and I want to do my part. This, along with my goal to be in a leadership position, has fueled my desire to pursue a career as a Clinical Nurse Leader.

I am excited by the possibility of returning to XXXX to pursue the Clinical Nurse Leader program. XXXX prepared me well with a strong undergraduate foundation. I am confident this will be repeated with the master's level Clinical Nurse Leader program. As demonstrated during my undergraduate work, I am a capable student who possesses the skills, perseverance and dedication to succeed in a challenging program earning the Dean's Honor Roll status and selection to the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society. My active role in student government and in the Student Nurses Association showed my desire to give back to the college and others. Even though I have just recently completed my Bachelor of Science in Nursing, I find myself eager to resume my education. This is the right time in my life to do so as I have not yet started my family and my focus remains on my nursing career. Given the chance, I am confident I will continue to represent XXXX with integrity and excellence.

As a practicing RN, I now understand the day-to-day challenges that medical staff experiences that could lead to compromised care. I very much want to pursue the Clinical Nurse Leader track at XXXX because I believe this will prepare me to make a sustainable contribution to the nursing profession. I look forward to career advancement the Clinical Nurse Leader position will afford me as I am intrigued by future roles in administration and education. Thank you for your consideration of my application.
