application essay
Please explain to the Admissions Committee your decision to pursue the Uni. X MSc in Business Analytics. Why are you an ideal candidate for the program and how will the program help you achieve your goals? (500 words or less)
Hello guys, as you may read in my essay below, I am not the most articulate of essayists but I have tried my best to create a good first draft. I tried to communicate the moment I wanted to get into this field through an analogy and then conclude as why I chose to apply to this program specifically. I know there are areas I want to improve but I also wanted to hear from others and see what they thought. I appreciate any and all advice!
Throughout my undergraduate years as an IT Management major, I often heard the phrases business analytics, big data, decision science and more floating around. I believed they were important, part of an emerging field but did not understand these terms on a deeper level. And, I definitely did not know that two years after graduating, I now hope to pursue a Master's in Business Analytics. All of which came about from an innocent shadowing program as part of my internship.
It was the Junior year of my bachelor's degree and I was jubilant. I had just received an offer from Company X to be a part of their summer internship program. I accepted and was going to be a Systems Administration Intern for the summer of Year X. I knew this was what I wanted to do for my career and was going to gain invaluable experience by taking part in this internship.
I learned more than I could fathom but was pleasantly surprised when told that my penultimate week in the internship would be a shadowing week. I and all other students had the opportunity to shadow a member of another group within the Technology umbrella that we were interested in. It was at this point I decided to explore my desire to learn about business analytics. I knew there was a lot of hype about this field and thus I was to shadow a member of the Business Intelligence and Analytics group. I noticed how this field was extremely interdisciplinary: stemmed from technical and quantitative analysis but so dependent on the analyst's ability to communicate their analysis in order to achieve the desired result; impacting business decisions through the use of data and analysis. This appealed to me. Not only did I consider myself to be excited and proficient all matters regarding technology and computers, but I also enjoyed public speaking and communicating ideas effectively, hence why I enjoyed working on a case study project for my capstone course.
I knew I wanted to be a part of this new and exciting field but believed I needed to learn more to set myself up for success in this field. After attempting to take classes part-time while working full time, I knew I needed to make a bigger change to achieve my goal. That is why I pursued the Business Analytics Certificate program at George Brown College. It was a good opportunity to start to learn about the Analytics field as well as a platform for me to demonstrate my academic capability. With that knowledge, I believe University X's MSc. in Business Analytics is the next and final platform for me to achieve my dream of becoming a Data or Business Analyst in the industry. What differentiates University X for me is case method learning which I believe is the most effective way of preparation for practical use. This learning method also compliments my strengths. Finally, University X's amazing reputation in Canada and in the business world along with the program's focus on career preparation can propel me in to successfully transition into the workforce.
