1) the events and ideas which led to your interest in this program, and 2) your goals and aspirations upon its completion.
Since I was a teenage girl, I have been dreaming of fashion, so I've tried to get all the education and experience I need to become a one of the great professionals in the industry as someone that I've seen in the magazine or heard from others. However, as I've experienced the reality of the industry for several years, it is certainly different from the fashion in movies and magazines that the teenage girl dreamed of. However, my passion for fashion is still growing even though I know it's not sweet as I dreamed. And, because of the differences between ideal image of fashion and professional experiences that I've have in the industry, I realize what I really wants to do in the fashion industry and it has led me to decide to gain more in-depth knowledge of fashion.
When I was a college student, I liked to use certain shapes or lines of subjects as a theme of my design. And, I was satisfied the fact that even thought I take the symbolic shapes of subjects, I applied it in abstract way so it was not too obvious and it is certainly a strength of my design skill so I could won design award in college. However, those designs give me just one-dimensional pleasant, which means it's just pretty without depth of thought. Since I have wide interests in the historical and social issues, I really passionate in designing based on detailed research of the historical issues. Therefore, gaining extensive knowledge on fashion history and trends in fashion history caused by social or political matters in the history is one of the main achievements that I plan in graduate school. Through the extensive and accurate research and experiment process, I want to design the clothes not only looks great but also give people a subject to think of. In other words, I want my designs to become a great method to interact with others and seek the understanding on the theme. And, hopefully, I can be a designer who can speak up on social issues through my own design. In order to achieve the goal, I need a lot to learn about fashion design and the study more about knowledge in social matters.
After graduating from **, I interned with +++. Through this internship I gained immense knowledge on the whole process of putting together a runway collection. After I finished my internship, I keenly felt the necessity of the construction technique required to be a professional. So I decided to get a professional experience in pattern making and technical design. And, It's been 2 years since I've been working as an associate pattern maker/technical designer in @@. I've gained a lot of professional experience through working with the designers, sample makers and people in the production department. It is really great to have a professional skills and knowledge in pattern making and technical design. In other words, it helps me to design considering construction matters so it can produce without conflict in the whole process. However, I started to feel that I am losing my creativity and I want more challenging and experimental work that I need to think and try a lot to make my design into real garment and I miss the extreme pleasure from an achievement after difficult process. Moreover, if I have a chance in the future, as I build my career in the fashion industry, I'd like to teach my knowledge and skill to students who want to be a professional in the industry.
I believe that a wide range of knowledge really allows oneself to be open to the others and that's the basis of interaction between people. And, I think the one of the most important value, as a member of any society is willingness of interaction. Especially, fashion is the industry that based on interaction between designer and consumer. In other words, a good designer knows what the consumer wants and needs to wear. To be one of the great professional in the industry, I really want to study fashion in depth and interact well with others such as consumers, co-workers or students that I would meet in the future. That is how I start to feel keenly the need to gain deeper knowledge in fashion and society.
My decision to focus on designing as an undergraduate and to explore to pattern making and technical design after college has equipped me with a unique set of strengths and attracted me to pursue the higher education in fashion design. And, The depth of my interest in fashion has grown since I was teenager, and now I am ready to devote my passion to gaining depth of knowledge, and achieving my goal of furthering my career in fashion by joining && graduate school in Fashion Design and Society.
