Assignment Prompt / Instructions:
Essay 1 (required)
Please submit an essay describing why you want to work in the health profession.
Here is what I have written:
During high school, I always had enjoyed science classes such as biology and chemistry; however I never gave much thought as to how I could further pursue a career in medicine. After high school, I did not have a well-developed educational or professional roadmap yet, hover this did not stop me from figuring out that science was still calling my name. I eventually decided that entering the pharmacology field would be a good starting point, so I enrolled in a pharmacy technician program at Pima Medical Institute, which I enjoyed immensely. I remember studying like it was yesterday. Keflex-Cefalexin (anti-biotic), Zovirax-Acyclovir (anti-viral), Depakote-Valproic Acid (treats seizures), I read aloud as I continued to lay down the foundation of studying prescription drugs, classifications and interactions. During my studying, is when I first started to realize my appreciation for medicine along with my intrinsic motivation to continue learning about medicines and how they help people to manage pain, cure sickness and lead normal lives.
The more I learned about pharmacology, the stronger my interest and desire grew about the field of pharmacology. I began to immerse myself further into the field of pharmacology by learning as much as I could as a new pharmacy technician. Taking pride in the accuracy that I could provide in order to better assist the Pharmacist was also of the highest importance to me. While I was a pharmacy technician I learned the importance of being a part of a cohesive team and how this ensures a better experience for the team as well as the patients. Ensuring that patients receive the correct medication and dosages by communicating with the administering physicians' offices and insurance companies was the very breath of my daily regimen. My first main experience in the health care field was an unforgettable experience and unfortunately was short lived after the birth of my son because I wanted to stay home with him for a while.
After my son was old enough to start school, I decided it was time to return to school myself. I went on to complete an undergrad degree in information technology as well as bachelor's degree in business management. I choose technology and management in order to give me a more rounded educational background to be able to apply that education to my further professional and academic settings.
During the last course of my bachelor's degree, I started to reflect on my life such as my educational and business achievements and what I wanted to go on to accomplish next. I came to the conclusion that the next goal that I want to achieve would be to become an anesthesiologist where I could further help people in a healthcare environment. I dedicated hours of research to find out what part of medicine I would be succeed at and enjoy the most. I ended up speaking to several doctors to include pediatricians, anesthesiologists, dentists, optometrists and surgeons to make an informed decision and ensure becoming a physician would be a good fit and something that I would enjoy. So here I am at the next step of choosing a pre-med post baccalaureate program in order to complete the prerequisites for medical school by taking the needed science courses, MCAT and clinical experience.
After countless hours researching and comparing pre-med post-baccalaureate programs. I have decided that the best fit for me would be attending Bennington University. I feel that being a part of your post-baccalaureate program will offer me the best opportunity to prepare for medical school. Thus enabling me to become an anesthesiologist, while at the same time allowing me to add value to your student body by graduating and being accepted to a medical program in Virgina.
