Hi. I wrote this SOP for admission to a journalism college. Before sending it to the institute, I am hereby pasting it for moderation. Please help me in this. Just two days are left for my deadline.

Virtual academic Gods and Journalism

Journalism is not about finding stories or sharing anecdotes but critically analyzing the facts, scrutinizing the truth, fair and candid presentation of events in front of the masses, asking unbiased questions to everyone; even those who possess highest echelons in the society. It doesn't involve being brash or curt but to voice opinions, it calls for being challenging and honest.

Even though there are many demanding professions but a career in journalism paves way for independent thinking. It will definitely hone my writing, oratory and presentation skills and above all will satiate my career aspirations.

My love or rather I can say respect for the journalism started while watching the coverage of Kargil war on TV. Until this day watching news on television was a mundane chore but my perception changed, while I witnessed the operation being covered by the audacious correspondents.

The entire coverage left an indelible impression on a ten year old's mind and awakened curiosity in seeking a career in journalism.
The thought of being a TV news reporter encapsulated me so much that I started reading newspapers and narrating the headlines in front of mirror. Just then when I was being a journalist in making, my grandfather asked me to focus on my studies than to dream of becoming a journalist. I could sense his insecurity and fear behind this decision. Being a constituent of a community battling for existence, he never wanted me to venture into such a territory. I was born in a very respectable family residing in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

The exodus from the Kashmir valley wasn't a mere migration of a certain sect of the society but a virtual metempsychosis of human bodies who left their souls back in their ancestral abodes. It meant breaking up my family and leaving our home and property behind to gamble for life in a mysterious place due to political turmoil leading to terrorism.

Being the eldest child of my family, I had learned to take responsibility for myself and my younger sister. The decision of studying journalism was not exactly feasible considering my family's current situation, and hence I let go my dream.

Everything was so shambolic and still my parents "in utter poverty and desperation" somehow managed to admit me to a decent school, where I worked hard to earn a good college for my under graduation studies.

Besides the college academics I was actively involved in the extra-curricular activities. The driving force behind all this was my aim to develop all the facets of my personality. After completion of studies, my sedulous efforts fetched me a job in a good organization I carried forward my penchant in my professional arena too.

Now after years of serving various organizations I want to rekindle my heartfelt childhood desire which had gone astray.
Although I've technical background and do not possess any formal education in the field of Journalism, yet my insatiable hunger for exploring this avenue has encouraged me to venture into this territory.

I am sure that with my perseverance I can develop the delivery of information in accordance with the ever-changing technologies and techniques in the broadcast media industry.

As I embark upon a new stage of my life, I believe that a postgraduate diploma course will provide a milestone in my career along with invaluable experiences that will allow me to become a successful, innovative professional and assist in accomplishing my goals.

I am confident that overall opportunity to study in your esteemed institute will broaden my horizons and give me an opportunity to gain world class education and help me equip myself with skills.

Moreover, I would want to take maximum advantage and imbibe the qualities of virtual academic demi-Gods that the _______faculty possesses. I am confident that the erudite faculty will make my learning experience extraordinary. If I get the opportunity to be a part of that intellectually stimulating environment, I am sure my talents will be put to optimal use."

In congruence with the above mentioned facts, I would, request you to consider my application for admission in your esteemed institute as it will offer me more opportunities to pursue my interest in greater depth.

Ankita, you have certainly written an impressive essay here. It really shows your passion and desire to become a very good journalist. However the impressive essay is marred by the fact that what you wrote isn't a statement of purpose but rather, a personal statement. So put a pin in this essay and save it for a more appropriate prompt discussion. You will need to write a new essay that will be more relevant for the sop based upon my suggestions below.

For starters, since you completed a different college degree, you need to explain what your first degree was and what pushed your decision to change careers at this point. The purpose for your enrolment will therefore become a career change. You may want to rehash the story from your childhood at that point. Move your age up to 13 instead of 10. Better yet, don't mention an age at all so that the reviewer will not question the reliability of the influence. It is the event that matters more.

Afterwards, you can, and should, explain why you ended up in a career far removed from your original interests. Then Depot what led you back to journalism. If you did any activities related to writing during that time, discuss it in this section. This will take the place of the required work experience in relation to journalism.

In the end, discuss the university that you chose to attend, the course you will enroll in and the factors that made you choose this university. Add information about how you hope to grow there and why you believe this choice is best given your skills and training. This would be the closing statement.

I strongly recommend that you make this an urgent thread once you have applied the revision so that I can continue to give your essay development there. Sadly, I can only advice you once in this thread. I hope to continue helping you finalize your essay soon.

Hi ankitak..

Sorry .. but I don't think your SOP is good enough for admission.
You write it without follow the flow, you may need to make point or headline for what you should write.
Better if you write from past to present.
1. Write why you want to take Journalism, what is your background related to this program.
2. Write your supporting experience in this field.
3. Write why you want to take journalism program in this university/ faculty
4. Write your hope or wishes in the future
