It is clear that the world is increasingly polluted and full of problems involving the environment. Unfortunately, people do not have the same worry about preserving the environment so that this fundamental right is guaranteed to present and future generations, in order to ensure the welfare of all. Thus, I propose to be part of a group that has this concern and give my contribution to preserve the quality of the environment. That is why I chose a profession that would address not only the urbanism, but also the environmental aspects as well as social. Also, I want to use natural resources to benefit society and, somehow, return them to the planet by practices developed for this purpose. Brazil, for example, country where I was born and raised, is full of natural resources and need a lot of people that can help preserve nature, but also uses it appropriately, to benefit society and become a cleaner and healthier country.
I have graduated in Architecture and Urbanism at the University Center of Joao Pessoa, Paraiba, Brazil, course which I fell in love from the first day I entered the university, where the professional cares about the customer and their needs, but above all respect the laws that preserve the environment in order to cause the least possible environmental impact. I believe my country need special care, and skilled professionals to build rather large projects, but always thinking and worrying about causing the least effects on the environment.
The course taught me solid knowledge to design, build and renovate buildings of all sizes, as well as working in the areas of urban development and planning, preservation and restoration of historical patrimony, emphasizing the integration of any building with the environment. Furthermore, it provided me focus on sustainability, optimizing construction processes, reducing resultant leavings, and reducing the energy consumption of the construction, having also intended that the building achieves a level of thermal comfort and air quality adequate, thereby reducing requiring the use of ventilation systems or artificial heating.
Also noteworthy is that, in my working end of graduation, I designed a Sports Center with sustainable features, such as water reuse, rainwater utilization, maximizing the use of natural resources, as well as the use of ecological materials. By studying the proposal of the facades of my graduation project, I met Masdar Institute through an architecture website . I was fascinated by the architectural design of Masdar Institute, after this research I read everything about this Institute and when I saw the programs and the real cause which it defended, I was even more interested, as Masdar is an institution methodically and actively engaged to solve problems facing the environment, forming professionals who are critical thinkers of advanced energy and sustainability.
Admittedly that was always in my plans to do a master degree outside Brazil so my course ended, but I still had not decided where, and when I read about the Masdar I thought this would be a great chance. Soon after I graduated, my husband received a proposal to work on a project of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed in Abu Dhabi , he accepted the job and at the end of August I came to live here. Be living in Abu Dhabi, a country that has a faith so beautiful and a culture so different from mine, is being an enriching experience for me, I feel very safe and happy living here. I believe this is a unique opportunity to pursue my professional goals. During the course of Architecture, I had the pleasure to meet a teacher who is fascinated by his career, and always told me that life is a constant learning that we can not stand ever, that learning should be pursued with ardor and taken with diligence. Besides having an architecture office, he is a professor in the university, and is always innovating their knowledge. I am grateful to him for having let me take that knowledge throughout my professional life, and I admire his determination and commitment to his work. It was he who gave me motivation to want to give my best and persevere to achieve my goals. So it is clear my interest in doing a doctorate in Masdar Institute, as I intend to expand my knowledge and be able to transmit it to others, in addition to performing works that are focused on environmental sustainability. I want to have the same commitment that my teacher had with me and his other students with my future students. For this, first I am applying for the master's program in environmental engineering water in Masdar Institute, since this program was the most identified myself, due to the fact that my family was born in a very small and hot city, where drought affects so devastating, and the people suffer from the lack of water, therefore study a program which focus is to ensure a sufficient and equitable access to safe potable water and the ability to devise solutions to the problems in the field of water and environmental engineering, it will be crucial for me to be able to help in the future those areas in my country where has an alarming drought.
Finally, I am sure I will dedicate myself to the utmost to achieve the goals of the program, so therefore I succeed in solving problems and understanding their impact for sustainable development. In all, I intend to collaborate with teachers together to broaden the knowledge and strategies of technological innovation in sustainable development to improve the progress of society in order to achieve sustainable development. Therefore I also crave progress my knowledge and do a PhD that Masdar Institur offers, and of course if my hard work and effort is recognized, I want to have the honor to work for this institute.
